iTunes Ringtones tab will allow custom ringtones for your Apple iPhone!

Macrumors is reporting that the iPhone-required iTunes 7.3 software has been spotted with a “Ringtone” tab! The “ringtone” tab was first sighted at hte Macworld announcement of the Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) iPhone. Furthermore, the new version of iTunes has been listed as an iPhone requirement but is still not released.
The speculation goes something like this: iTunes will take any song available on iTunes and convert it into a custom ringtone for your Apple iPhone. The service will run you $0.99, and it’s not clear whether you will have to download new songs for this feature, or if you can use songs you currently own in your iTunes library or on a CD.
You can create your custom ringtone through a “Garageband-like” interface – allowing you to choose what 30-second section you want to use as your ringtone.
The Apple Q&A list also shows a picture of the iTunes software with 8 tabs (as opposed to the 6 we’ve seen in the video). We won’t be able to use MP3’s as ringtones outright, but at least we’ll be able to make custom ringtones from our MP3’s! (and we’re not at all surprised by the very Apple-like move to charge a buck for each ringtone)

“And all the fanboys rejoiced”
So, you buy a song for $0.99, and if you want to cut that song down to 15% of what it originally was, it’ll cost you ANOTHER $0.99?
Does the average cell phone consumer really not know what Audacity is? Were they really paying $1.99 for ringtones this whole time? This must come as the deal of the century for them.
It’s a great feature. Too bad we have to pay for it. I would rather hackup my own file and sideload it onto my phone. Been doing that for the better part of a decade, and now I’m going to be forced to pay Apple for the “convenience.”
Still, at a buck, it doesn’t hurt too bad.

Ringtones for iPhone easy and quick! no converting to m4a use mp3!
Alright peeps I found a way that’s so super easy and you can get a ringtone from any mp3 (haven’t tried anyother file types, but everyone has mp3’s) you need an internet/wi-fi connection for iPhone. Download winSCP link at bottom. once you have installed the program launch it. the host is your ip address (go to iphone, settings, wi-fi, click on choose your network) should now show your ip adress. login is: root password is: dottie. This will now sync via network your iphone and all it’s directories. click on library and find the ringtone folder, open it up and you should see a few pre-loaded mp3 ringers already!!!! no m4a required. I copied a sond onto my desktop, then dragged it onto the ringtone flolder under WinSCP. It will ask to copy, click yes and it’ll be in your ringtone folder! EASY AS PIE! post comments to make me feel good about this discovery…..enjoy! P.S. you can trim your mp3’s to say 30 seconds to save space before loading onto phone…. BTW i think apple wants m4a so that it shows up on itunes…i don’t care about that
in winSCP go to root dir. then “private” then “var” then “root” then “library” and then you will see the “ringtones” folder…

Also this program is just a quick and easy way to access and transfer files between your computer and iphone. This program also however allows you directly into program files that your phone operates on, so one must not tinker with misc files the wrong way or phone will not operate normally. There are other things you can put on here also, background, themes, icons, etc….those files would be treated as preloaded software. The ringtones will not show up in itunes because they are not in m4a format. I presume. This program has nothing to do with itunes.
did not work for me… kept saying connection refused. i have a secured wireless network, does that make a difference?
It’s a great feature. the another i got it from http://www.vistafeel.com
