Apple to announce a 3G iPhone for Europe on Monday?

Sounds quite improbable, but what the heck — I’m going to cover it nevertheless. Apparently, Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) will be announcing a 3G iPhone on Monday that will be sold in Europe. According to NewsWireless, Jobs&Co will partner with T-mobile (NYSE: DT) and Vodafone (NYSE: VOD), as well as Carphone Warehouse to distribute the fancy device.
The unlikely moment here is that with this move Apple would instantly mock all the people waiting in line to grab their 2.5G iPhone. I could imagine their frustration once they realize that their counterparts across the pond surf the Web with the full speed of 3G. Nah, we’ll have to wait for at least a couple of months for the 3G version.

I’d LOVE for Apple to announce the 3G iPhone in Europe on Monday to shut up all the Apple apologists flooding the message boards on Macworld and elsewhere about how “EDGE isn’t that bad” and “3G uses too much power.” Since they need a 6 month lead time, anyway (to clear regulatory hurdles), the timing is about right for a “2007 launch” of iPhone in Europe, just in time for Christmas. That phone will easily cost in Euros what it costs here in dollars (higher taxes, etc.). Don’t think for a minute that Europeans are going to drop $750-1000 on a phone that doesn’t support 3G.
Well, not that crazy really given that 3G coverage is better over here also as consumers we want more functions for our money…
