iPhone works sans AT&T service?

Developer Alex King made his iPhone work without AT&T's service. No guarantees that it will continue to work, but for now it looks like a video iPod and iPhone test device he was hoping for. Personally, I don't see much point in doing this — you could get the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet for surfing the web and music/video playback. On the other hand, this way you get the iPod and not some other media player — I know that there are some true iPod fans out there that would appreciate this. Also, this way an iPhone could work around the world… Actually, only the iPod and WiFi part of it…
