Unlocking the iPhone possible?

Like the iPhone but don’t want to stick with AT&T (NYSE: T) for two years? Well, that will have to wait. In the meantime, it seems that someone succeeded to unlock the iPhone. That someone is Jon Lech Johansen, also known as DVD John, who played with the iPhone’s activation process to discover whether is possible to use Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)’s flagship device sans AT&T service.

Interested? You’ll need to download Phone Activation Server v1.0, as well as MS .NET Framework 2.0 installed to activate your iPhone for pure iPod+WiFi use. Next, you’ll need something that John calls “magic iTunes numbers” that could be found on his site. He doesn’t explain what to do with those numbers, only that they are needed in order to unlock the phone.
Also noted – TUAW points out that it is also possible to activate iPhone using a prepaid plan with AT&T…
