NTT DoCoMo is killing us; Begins testing Super 3G network

While most of the world still has to feel the real 3G speeds (not to mention HSDPA), always tech savvy folks at NTT DoCoMo have started testing their Super 3G network to achieve a downlink transmission rate of 300Mbps (yes, that’s three hundred megabits per second!). The technology behind Super 3G is highly advanced version of HSDPA and HSUPA, which have been evolved from W-CDMA packet transmission technologies standardized by the 3GPP, and is also known as Long Term Evolution (LTE) in 3GPP’s circles.

NTT DoCoMoThe Japanese carrier will begin with an indoor experiment to test transmission speed using one transmitting and one receiving antenna, and then expand it to examine downlink transmission by employing up to four Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) antennas for both the base station (transmission side) and mobile station (receiving side). DoCoMo will also examine the “handover function” - switching of the connection between two base stations, as well as functionality of applications for voice and image transmission, and games.

Finally the date — when can we expect to see the new kind of ultra-fast networks? According to DoCoMo not before 2009, when the carrier expects to complete development of Super 3G technology. And then, who knows when will the other carriers pick it up. :(
