Verizon Wireless flip-flops – supports some “open-access” for 700Mhz spectrum

We love making fun of huge corporations, like Verizon (NYSE: VZ) Wireless, for stifling innovation and general anti-consumer practices. But, news like this makes it hard for us to stay mad at them. Apparently, Verizon Wireless is changing their mind on opening up part of the 700Mhz frequency spectrum – but only going as far as backing a proposal to reserve a portion of the highly sought-after spectrum for access to any device.
The move isn’t as consumer-friendly as Google (NSDQ: GOOG)’s four-part open-access suggestions, but it’s still nice to see the corporate fat-cats actually starting to think of the consumer. If you’ll remember, Google has pledged to bid at the reserve price of $4.6 billion if the FCC meets the four-part proposal.
The FCC commission is slated to vote next week to determine the ground rules for the upcoming 700Mhz auction. We’ll let you know how it goes.
