Nokia opens mobile phone design studio in Bangalore, India

With established wireless markets saturated to the point of making lesser handset manufacturers want to jump ship, it makes sense to try to get an advantage in emerging markets. It looks like Nokia (NYSE: NOK) is all about that particular strategy, they’re getting their foot in the emerging-market-doors of places like India. The market-leading Finnish handset manufacturer has just cut the ribbon on the doors of their new “satellite” design center in Bangalore, India - the Silicon Valley of India.
The move is intended to keep Nokia ahead of manufacturers, like Motorola (NYSE: MOT), in emerging markets around the globe. And, the Indian market is emerging with a fury - adding 6 million new mobile phone users a month!
Says Hannu Nieminen, head of innovations at Nokia Design, “Design is not just about the look and feel of the handset but equally important is what it can do for people and how it fits into their lives,” said…Designers must be exposed to how people live and work in different places around the world.”
While everyone is concentrating on iPhone this and iPhone that, it looks like Nokia is quietly ensuring its future as a global leader in handset design and, more importantly, handset market share. We have a feeling that Nokia is actually enjoying all the attention that Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) and its iPhone are getting - it gives Nokia the option to run a screen-play on the field of global handset manufacturing. They’re clearly playing their own game here.

Nokia has always played their own game as far as the emerging markets (especially India) are concerned.
Today Nokia is almost ubiquitous with cell phone users in India. From their flagship products (Vertu, NSeries) to their economy line, you can catch every one in the hands of Indian consumers.
I am very interested to know what Apple does to bring their consciousness to the Indian market. That sleek ‘good-software-writers-make-their-own-hardware’ mentality is missing in my opinion and that is where Apple has a niche over the iterative stuff that Nokia does for the market.
