Idea: Palm should push Foleo as a blogging tool!

By Dusan Belic on Saturday, August 4th, 2007 at 6:11 AM PST In Devices, Linux, Palm

Just a few days ago I wrote about 4 things I would like to see in Palm Foleo. Then an idea popped to my mind - Palm (NSDQ: PALM) should push Foleo to bloggers!

Nowadays, most of us have or can afford a laptop. However, even though I have a small laptop I would want an even smaller one without paying a hefty premium (who wouldn’t). In that sense, Palm’s “mobile companion” should fit nicely for blogging purposes only.

Palm Foleo

Basically, I think that most bloggers need some simple app for managing images (resize, crop and such things), and a browser with full AJAX support and tabbed browsing. When I write something, usually there are at least 3 tabs opened in a browser. If Palm could deliver this, I would be happy to jump on board.

The processor speed and available RAM is what matters the most. We don’t want to go back to old hardware, rather we need a dedicated blogging computer which could run on a slower processor, but is much lighter thus easier to carry around. And then… I can easily imagine Palm partnering with Six Apart, WordPress and possibly even Blogger. What a great marketing channel that would be for Palm. Damn with the corporate users — we are the ones which want more freedom! :)

Could Palm actually make this happen? What do you think?

  1. Imo, it makes more sense to simply get BT keyboard and blog from my smartphone, rather than spending 500$ on the foleo.
And if you’re in the mood to rake out $$, 600$ will get you a nice dell with 1gb ram and a core2duo processor. Why would you waste money on a foleo?

The foleo is a joke and will bomb just as magnificently as the “lifedrive” did for palm. What’s sad is someone at Palm thinks this is a good idea…. it should have never left the drawing board.

Stick another nail in their coffin….

It’s good for touch-typing intellectuals, along the line of the alphasmart dana — which unfortuneatly has bad internet access. I do blog a lot (it gives me more motivation to write when I think someone may be listening — even though noone really is) — and this is pretty much why I’m getting the foleo. The only thing I do on my laptop these days, is type and look at porn. I do wish that the foleo would have higher porn capabilities, but maybe that’s a good thing.

Palm has already announced that they are working with SixApart on blogging tools for the Foleo: http://investor.palm.com/pressdetail.cfm?ReleaseID=255945

The comparison of the Foleo to $600 Dell laptops is so tiresome to me. It’s a huge value that the Foleo weighs 2.5 lbs instead of 6 lbs, that it is instant-on like a PDA, that it is totally solid state (no delicate hard drive), and that despite it’s light weight it delivers 5 hours of continuous operation while connected to the network. You can get *some* of those advantages by buying a $2-$3,000 ultra-light laptop today, but certainly not for $500-600. The trade-offs will be just right for a LOT of mobile users (myself included).
