Video (French, but it is a must watch): S40 vs S60, the two operating systems that drive the bulk of Nokia’s phones

I’ve been ranting about this for quite a while and I’m glad someone finally put it on video. As a phone operating system first and foremost, S40 does a better job than S60, there is also more functionality out of the box. This video goes through 10 differences between the operating systems and if you have absolutley zero knowledge of the French language I recommend you read this list first before hitting play:

  1. The time is only visible on the home screen of S60, this isn’t the case with S40 where the time is everywhere.
  2. You get a preview of the themes in S40 when scrolling by them, they don’t appear in S60 unless you preview them.
  3. S40 lets you record your phone calls out of the box, you need third party tools to do this in S60.
  4. S40 has this menu view where you don’t have to bury to find features. It is similar to the menu system on a Sony PSP.
  5. The calender on S40 blows S60 out the water. You can set call reminders, there is more information visible in the month view and it takes fewer clicks to add information.
  6. I have no idea what he said. Something about profiles.
  7. The standby screen on S60 has a limited number of icons on top and very little calendar information compared to S40 which has no such limit on the number of shortcuts and has a rich calender view.
  8. Something about the contacts, again no clue.
  9. Something about the log.
  10. S40 has the ability to let you send a text message to the most recent people you’ve already sent a text message to. S60 does not have this.

Conclusion: The built in calculator for S40 is more powerful and … will someone who speaks French please translate portion for the video?

There you have it. I probably would have been a better translator if my French teacher in high school wasn’t an incredibly sexy 20 something year old who had no problem wearing tight and revealing clothing. Those kids who sleep with their teacher and then brag about it to their friends which then gets said slutty professor fired, they ruin it for the rest of us.

And there’s one more thing…
S40 and S80 can do it. But not S60: There is no option to display the sim contacts by default, you always have to navigate through the menu to display them. Terrible.

Thanks stephane for linking my video.
    Your translation is fine.
Please tell me which part of the video you wish me to translate.

To the contacts: S40 can display the names, names and numbers or names with pics, and you can choose a normal or big font.

  4. lutzs says:

And to the log: S40 also lists the outgoing SMS and MMS, S60 only the phone calls. Then he mentioned that S40 shows little notices to every menu option, when you wait a few seconds.

  5. Greg: Could you please translate just your conclusion? Would like to hear your final verdict on who you think the winner is and what both operating systems can learn from each other.

  6. Greg says:

    Sure,

    My Conclusion is the following:
“S40 devices are much more than dumb phones. Indeed they now have some software features that are still not available on the S60 plaform. Some PIM applications (contacts, calendar) offers more features on S40 than S60. That’s why I think Nokia should take it into account in the next Feature Packs.”

The thing about the profiles, no. 6
In S40 you can program the profiles if you for example want to have the silent profile every saturday the phone will fix that for you if you just program it like that. In S60 you cant, you have to choose the profile manually everytime.

have to wait untill S60 3rd Edition FP2 to have some basic S40 features :???:
