Iraq launched the sale of three licences to operate mobile phone services this week. The starting price is set at $300 million for the 15-year mobile licences and there are five consortiums bidding for at an auction in Jordan.
Mobile phone service is one of the very few industries which are thriving in Iraq, and it doesn’t surprises to see companies bidding for the right to roll out their networks and get new customers. Hopefully, the people of Iraq who already suffered enough will at least get decent networks soon…
UPDATE: The licenses were (re)sold to Iraq’s existing network operators — Kuwait’s Mobile Telecommunications and Asiacell, and Iraq’s own Korek Telecom — for a princely total of $3.75 billion.
