Sprint get’s touched by HTC - Sprint Touch
By Will Park on Saturday, August 18th, 2007 at 8:14 PM PST In Announcements, Devices, HTC, Sprint, Windows Mobile
With AT&T (NYSE: T) and their iPhone putting the squeeze on other carriers’ subscriber base, it makes sense for them to scramble for the next-best iPhone alternative. As of now, the coolest touchscreen competitor in The States is the HTC Touch (and it’s CDMA brother, the HTC Vogue). And, it looks like Sprint (NYSE: S) wants in on the TouchFLO game. The CDMA Touch (again, the HTC Vogue) has been confirmed on the Sprint network as the appropriately named Sprint Touch. As expected, the Sprint Touch will be rocking the same 400Mhz processor, 2.8 inch screen, quad-band GSM radio with EDGE, Bluetooth 2.0, microSD slot, and 2 MP shooter as all the other “Touches” in the world. But, Sprint has decided to make some proprietary changes to the TouchFLO interface. The TouchFLO cube will sacrifice one of it’s “faces” for a Sprint Software Store - weak. But, the improved keyboard and upgradeable EVDO (to Rev. A, naturally) helps even things out.All you Sprint loyals keeping an eye out for this thing to drop had better stay tuned, we’ll keep you in the loop.[Via: WM Experts]

I’m fairly sure all the other ‘touches’ in the world have had a 200 mHz processor, not a 400. This is a big upgrade for sprint.
A quad-band GSM radio with Edge won’t be much use on Sprint!
Right you are!
That’s what I get for trying to cut&paste.
This is going to be one sweet phone.

now i work for sprint well sprint/radioshack kiosk and i have been doin alot a looking around about this phone and from what i can tell this is going to be the start of a hole new way of thinking for cell phones and to be honest i think its about time the only worrie i have is about the cost of the phones
Cost is a definite concern.
But I agree with you, touchscreens will become more and more important. But, that’s not to say that there won’t be a market for non-touchscreen phones.
As you said, cost will be prohibitive to some, but at least we get rebates and subsidies with new contracts/activations.
well one good thing is that i hurd that sprint is going to start doing there full rebates as long as you sign a new (2) year contract (somthing that they should have done from the start if you ask me) wich is a good thing so that will pull down the price.
just wanted to know if anyone hurd anthing about the releas date i hurd form some web pages that it will be end of this mounth early next mounth then i hurd the 4 of november wich would be cool sence my b-day is two days after just let me know what you know later
When does this phone come out for Sprint? I’m really looking forward to it!
as far as i know it is a camcorder but scence nothing has been released for it so i dont know it is running windows 6 tho and it has meadi player so you would have to think that it could but you never know.
what i really want to know is what the price is gonna be i here 460.00 but you never know it could be less (hopfully) but if not i think i can take the blow to the wallet lol
I also work for a radioshack kiosk. I hear this phone is going to be out before Christmas. The price is still up in the air from what I hear
. HTC is a good brand, but anytime you have a brand new phone like this, there will be problems… Ex: Ipone=text messaging. I would wait a couple of months before you jump into buying this thing and see if there are any flaws.
hey chris you would not happen to work in orange park would you
Phone come out November 4th. I have a frined work at Sprint.
were does your friend work beacuse i work for sprint and its going to start comming out on the 28 of this mount at least for us sprint enployees lol but for everyone els as far as i know it will be the fourth
hey wasup, we deffinitly have 4 major new phones coming out before the holidays but the HTC touch will be the biggest target.
do any one know if the touch has gps turn by turn direction on it ty
I’m pretty sure the review is wrong about Wi-Fi, I think Sprint stripped it out of this phone. Which is to bad, that would have easily made it the ultimate phone to have…
http://www2.sprint.com/mr/news_dtl.do?id=18320
this website may be helpful. IM SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS PHONE i hope that its not expensive and that the onscreen key board bottons are to small.
It has Wifi but is being enabled because of the EV-DO, i dont think it will have GPS but who really needs it when you have things like google maps and such, anyway i hear they will have a software update of telenav sometime after release. Although the keyboard is fairly small and the stylus must be put to use when texting, there will be a software for a full keyboard available if you’re a quick text type of person too. $249 after your $100 rebate and a new contract isnt bad at all for everything else you get.
Then will there be a way to turn wifi on? I heard they completely removed it from the Sprint version.
probably not but that will be the first thing i check out, we should have them in by friday.
Does anyone know if the Touch’s text messanging has threaded chat like the Palm 755 & Centro??
Does anyone know if Telenav or GPS is on this phone? I hope so! I really like the small size.
the text mess come in like email, but there is a messenger on it in which you could use like that, there is a app you can get for the gps
How about Picture Mailing by sending to other cell phone users? Currently I have the Moto Q & the only way to send a picture mail is by using 1 of the email accounts like AOL or Yahoo. But when I had the Krzr I was able to send pictures to another cell phone #.
Oh by the way, thanks for the info. I’m trying to decide between getting the HTC Touch or the Palm Centro. I’m having a hard time figuring out which 1 to get. Can you give me some insight on which would be a better deal??
well the centro is alot cheaper than the touch, however the centro is alot easier to text on, both have similar things in common like bluetooth, web, sprint tv, ect. The touch has a more mature look and soft feel where as the centro has a plastic feel to it. Overall, its not really what the touch does as far as features but its how it does it. (gotta love the touch-flo technology!)
That makes sense. I just wish that Sprint would just keep everything together in ONE phone instead of having some features in the Centro, some in the Treo, and then remove those same features from the Touch. The sprint store in my neighborhood didn’t have the Touch on display so I couldn’t try it out. But I was able to check out the Centro & it’s not too bad.
o yea the centro is very nice dont get me wrong, and probably more easy to use but i would try and go to a bigger sprint store like a corperate store to at least get a chane to play with the touch before you make your final decsion
O yea and there’s no support for MMS or Picture Mail as Sprint calls it, so you’ll have to send photos and video via email. The PDA phone supports POP3 and IMAP email along with Microsoft Direct Push mail and Exchange. There’s a link to download OZ Instant Messaging (no charge) and that app handles AIM, Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo IM.
Just wanted to let everyone know that I bought the Touch and it has well exceeded my expectations. The size alone makes it worth it. The touchflo interface is awesome and the keyboards will take a little getting use to, but once I practice a little I’m sure I will be able to type fast on them, without a stylus.
Any word on if there is a way to turn wifi on? Is there hardware even there? Can a wifi card be added? I don’t know how it could be unless it would go in the microsd slot.
how do u get the telanav app
I have actually used both the Touch and the Centro for two weeks each and still cannot decided which one to keep. One thing I have noticed is the Touch has the ‘cool’ factor. It is smaller, sleeker and just overall cooler in it’s features. However, the battery on the Centro lasts much longer and seems overall a more reliable phone. Does anyone have any suggestions or comments to help me with my decision making process?
Sarah,
I had the same problem deciding which phone to purchase as well. In the end, I decided to go with the Centro. It has some additional features that the Touch does not have. Such as Picture Mail, Threaded Chat, and there are lots of free third party apps (games, software, etc.) that you can download to the phone to get even more features out of it. The Palm OS seems like a better system to me compared to the Windows Mobile OS. The Palm OS works much better on my Vista Laptop than the Windows Mobile. I was never able to sync anything from the Windows Mobile OS to my laptop. The only major different between the phones are the touch cube thing on the HTC & you get some accessories.
Also, the Centro has Voice Nuance which is a cool app. You can talk your text messages, tasks, calendar appointments, etc instead of typing them.
Nice Review… as a touch owner… I love this phone. I use it for EVERYTHING!! I can now put my Samsung IP-830W on the Auction Block (I never travel int’l anyway)…. The Touch comes with nice strong belt pouch that I use to hold the touch while working out using it as My Mp3 player!
Also great for getting decent quality 2.0mp pics - surprisingly no Flash tho! ;-( . Net surfing is speedy… it wasn’t even 2 hrs after i bought it and I was already doing paypal transactions from the Touch!!!! Love it. The best Smart Phone ever invented IMHO (and I’ve owned most of them)
I sound like a Sprint or HTC rep… but I’m really not… I was ready to switch to AT&T after being a Sprint customer for 10 years straight…. simply because AT&T offer a better lineup of smartphones for business users.
Took a last chance visit to the Sprint Store and I was blown away by the Touch… it’s looks WAAAAAAAAAAAAY SEXIER in person!!!!! The online pics don’t do it ANY justice at all!!! For example, the silver two-tone bezzle around the screen is really like a black gun-metal color - which makes it look even better for those of us who are anal about phone cosmetics…
I’m sold… hands down… BEST COST-BENEFIT SMARTPHONE EVER MADE…. step on your i-phone… you won’t want it anymore!!!!
P.s. - Can’t wait for the GPS feature coming in Rev-A update.
I MUST SAY THAT THE SPRINT TOUCH IS ONE OF AKIND. I CHECKED OUT THE IPHONE, BUT I DIDNT GET CUZ I DIDNT WANNA SWITCH, BUT I WAS IF IT WAS BETTA THEN THE TOUCH. BUT I AM A WINDOWS MOBILE FAN. Do you know of a free third party spell check app for the Centro?
For Spell Check Apps, I was able to find:
http://handheld.softpedia.com/get/Word-Processing-Text-Tools/Spell5-40338.shtml
Let me know how it works out
Woa… i just read the whole page since Aug 24.
Well.. i order it today. I cant wait for it.
I have the blackberry7100 with nextel so i gave up my company’s two-way for this. It better be good.
Best part is that i ended up getting it FREE. Aparently i have been a good customer for about 7 years and paid in time so that entitled me to a $500 credit to Sprint. My due for the Touch is $9.30 hehe.
Questions
1: Dose the phone notifies you when you recive an email ?
2: Have they figure it out how to put Telenav in it ?
3: Any sites / forums dedicated to this phone ?
well to u this BeBe you have thirty days to take it back, the only thing i didnt like about it that it dont send pic unless its thru email, just like the blackberry and all other pocketpc phones thru sprint. and did u have da same blackberry for seven years. yea it will notify if u get email. it will cum thru like a text message sound, just have to program it to do that dat, well set it up.
haha… just like the email notification i just go on my blackberry that a new reply has been posted here.
Ive had all the expensive Nextel phones they every made since Nextel came out. No. Im not rich but i like to have the best things i can afford. The picture thing dosent bother me much. Im not a texting whore and plus email-ing the picture it just a few touches extra then texting it.
What i use alot is the email service. I recive emails on 3 different addresses and most of them i have to reply right a way. Also i use Yahoo Messenger alot talking to my relatives in europe. And the last often feature i use is the Telenav…it would be greate if they can add it to this phone. If not… ill have to try Google maps.
IPhone……well… my brother got one right when they came out….. you know… the only week that they cost $700 lmao. He was pissed the following week haha.
Its a very cool phone…no bashing …..Apple always makes the finest lil things,,,,,,,BUTTTTTTTT the only reason i didnt get the IPhone was :::::NO INSURANCE ::::: wow… how can AT&T not offer that?!?!?! Its crazy.
With the touch i got full service and repair as well as full replacement insurance.
Thumbs up already !!!!!
yea, i aint rich either and i got the phone for email to. i just found this cool full keyboard. Sph full keyboard, its called. so since u like to email u might like, so check it out.
ohh awesome.. you have a link ?

matter just put tis in ya addres bar. http://samsung-sph-i700.handster.com/product.php?id=7
BeBe,
How in the world did you manage to get the Touch for free/$9.30? I’ve been with Sprint for 10 years & they were fighting to give me the $99 promotional price on the Centro.
Hey folks, i just found an AWESOME feature in the Touch!! If you’re like me and can’t touch type to well, you can use the awesome Transcriber feature. The new Transcriber version in Mobile 6 is superior to past attempts. Instead of using the various keyboards on the bottom menu, select TRANSCRIBER, grab your stylus and WRITE yes WRITE your words out in your handwriting and TRANSCRIBER converts your handwriting to text!! It’s very foregiving too! I can write about 5 words at a time and it converts them all in one pass!!!
Try it out… WAAAY COOL!!!! LUVN MY TOUCH ALL OVER AGAIN!!!!
