US-bound Nokia N95 approved by FCC

Nokia N95 with US 3G support passes FCCAll those people lamenting the lack of US 3G frequency support on the Nokia (NYSE: NOK) N95 can rest easy. Our good, old friend, the FCC, has just given the thumbs-up approval for the American version of the Nokia N95. The US-spec N95 will be packin’ the same quad-band (850/900/1800/1900Mhz) GSM/EDGE radio, 5 megapixel Carl Zeiss camera, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, stereo Bluetooth, GPS, microSD slot, and Symbian S60 platform as it’s European brethren – but with one major difference. This baby will work on the US’s odd-ball 3G frequencies with it’s dual-band 850/1900Mhz WCDMA radio. The FCC’s approval of the run-of-the-mill (if you want to refer to the 5 megapixel Carl Zeiss optics and GPS as run-of-the-mill) Nokia N95 was a bit overshadowed by the FCC leak of the 8GB Black Nokia N95, but it’s an important development nonetheless.

That’s good and bad. It’s great news for all those US residents that have waited this long for the America-specific Nokia N95 to finally reach our shores – we’re sure this news has all of you jumping for joy. But, if you’re one of the gotta-have-it gadget aficionados that jumped the gun and ponied up for an imported Euro-spec Nokia N95, you’ll be sad to hear that we’ll soon have a fully-functional 3G radio on the US-spec N95. Bummer. Still, nothing else has changed, so it’s not that bad. (But damned if 3G wouldn’t round out the Nokia N95’s feature-set nicely, in the US that is)

I know it’s a blabber at this point but why the heck didn’t Nokia stick WCDMA 1700 in it as well???? With this model i’d call it USv2.5 since it will be good for at&t only yet T-Mobile users are still screwed without 3G.
