Alltel adds HTC PPC6800 to its portfolio

While Verizon (NYSE: VZ) subscribers are still waiting for their carrier to come out with what many consider to be the ultimate Windows Mobile smartphone, Alltel is losing no time with the launch of HTC PPC6800 — also known as Mogul on Sprint. Potential customers of this business-centric baby could expect everything they ever wanted from a smartphone, except maybe the built-in GPS and a better camera. There’s a WiFi, Bluetooth, 2 MP camera, full slide-out QWERTY keyboard, high-speed EV-DO radio, and an array of pre-installed software. All this is available for $249 with a two-year plan and a $100 mail-in rebate, or for $549 without any contract.

Interesting thing to note is that on its site Alltel is claiming the HTC PPC6800 is the Windows Mobile 5 based device. Kinda strange, as we’ve already seen it running the version 6 of the Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT)’s mobile OS. Is this a typo or what?

The HTC PPC6800 also supports Bluetooth 2.0, and the EVDO is upgradeable to EVDO Rev A via a future firmware update. Also, Alltel will be releasing a free Windows Mobile 6 Update in a few weeks, that is why it is pictured with WM 6. The WIFI link supports B/G with a hardware switch to enable/disable it, and the phone includes 256MB internal storage with a Micro SD slot for expanded storage. Hi,
I saw the htc ppc6800 on the alltel website and was very interested in it especially since it has wi However both the store rep and field rep in this area said the phone was either not available or discontined. If this is so why is it on the website, or do they just not know what phones are available? We have had a contract with Alltel for years and bought many phones.
The posted info on this phone seems very current so I just wanted to know if the phone was an option.
Thanks!
Anita
Anita, I went through a similar situation, called to speak to a customer rep about the new HTC PPC6800 and was told it was discontinued. They use to have the PPC6700 thas HAS been discontinued, but when i went into the store i had no problem buying mine. I highly recommend it, it does everything they say it does and more! I connected to network at work through the wifi and let me tell you it is soooo much faster than the Treo 700wx i used to have! I guess Alltel has to train their employees a little more on what products they have, but just keep trying – it’s worth the hassle!
Yes, I too got similar reactions from employees. Let me just say this. I am a staunch supporter of Alltel. Anytime I am with a group of friends my phone is always the one everyone uses b/c their carriers can’;t keep up and they have no service. (ATT/Cingular being the absolute worst!!!!) and the service reps in the company stores (for goodness sakes stay away from the franchise stores, they are the devil) are always the greatest, nice, able to engage you in conversation. However, unless you are going to talk about last nights football game or what happened on Ugly Betty, stay home and get on-line. Reason?: Alltel for whatever reason does not teach their reps shit….really, nada, zippo, noneya!!! You would think they would sink because of this but it seems to not bother anyone but me. I’ve had them tell me they don’t have something until I go and pull it off the wall and ask if they might just ring it up with that little bar code thingie they are clueless. So, arm yourself with knowledge (a lot, remember a little knowledge is a DANGEROUS as hell thing to have.), go to store, have everything in writing with you and tell them what you want, where to find it and how to ring it up. I guarantee they will do it with a suprised smile and then you can go ahead and talk about the game!

The HTC Phone is in the stores now. I ordered one from the rep. It was on backorder, but actually received it in just a few days. It is like having a mini, mini computer! Wi-Fi to home network connected quite well. The voice command funtion works great for moving around all the programs or dialing while in any other application.
