iTunes updates to version 7.4.1

iTunes updates to version 7.4.1iTunes 7.4 has barely been out long enough for people to get used to the idea of iTunes-compatible ringtones for our iPhones. Now we’re already working with iTunes version 7.4.1. So, what’s different?

Not much, apparently. Aside from the fact that any previously home-made ringtones that you uploaded using that slick .m4r file-renaming-workaround are now invalid, iTunes seems to be no different after the update.

But fear not, iTunes-compatible ringtone fan, a simple renaming of that .m4r file back to .m4a will fix your ringtone to work on your iPhone. So, what did Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) do here? We suspect they just changed the file extension that iTunes uses for ringtones – in other words, iTunes now uses .m4a files rather than .m4r files.
