AT&T: BlackBerry 8820 GPS is fully functional, not crippled

That’s right. The one thing we all feared with the launch of the RIM-made BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) 8820 was that AT&T (NYSE: T) would have crippled the GPS module to work only with the pay-service, TeleNav. Rumors were circling the various internets regarding such GPS-crippling – and the prospect of having to pay to use a feature that was built-in drew a lot of flack.
It looks like AT&T has confirmed that the now-available BlackBerry 8820 will be packed with not only WiFi, but a fully functional GPS unit. That means all you CrackBerry fans can get your GPS navigation fix (pun intended) without having to pay “the man.”
So, if you’ve been waiting for more information on the BB 8820’s GPS feature before taking the plunge, consider yourself informed. Go out and snatch up that BlackBerry 8820 from AT&T today for $299.99 (with 2-year contract and rebates, of course)- and let us know how much you like having WiFi and GPS at your fingertips.

This is fine phone but has a fatal flaw.

I went into ATT today to look at the 8820. The display information indicated some sort of service was required to get the GPS working. I asked, and the man told me your first month is free, and you have to pay $10 a month after that. Has anyone purchased one? Is that true?
This particular store is notorious at telling me I’ll HAVE TO pay for various extra services if I buy some phones. I’d been looking at the Tilt, and was told I also had to buy a data plan if I got that phone. And I was told that my GSM phone (nokia 6620) I’m still using from the original ATT would quit working soon, that I’d have to buy a new phone, sign a new contract, and pay activation fees.
I do all my business at another ATT Store that’s about 3 times the distance away, but the people there are more interested in taking care of the customers. I only go into the one closest to me for information.
Now that I’m properly sidetracked, can anyone that owns the phone verify the GPS issue?
