Windows Mobile Pocket Internet Explorer browses shared network files

Here’s a cool little trick that lets you browse your shared Windows files on your Windows Mobile smartphone. If you’ve got a WiFi enabled WinMo smartphone and a wireless home-network, then you’re al set to start browsing your PC’s collection of “movies.”

Simply point your Pocket Internet Explorer to file://computername. “Computername” is the name of your host computer (where the shared files are stored). No need for extra software or settings.

Go try it out, it’s pretty cool.

I have a Treo 800w with WM6.1. When I try this it automatically changes from “file://servername” to “file://\\servername\” and then fails.

  3. Nick says:

    enter file://computername/sharename
where sharename is name you gave to the network share, may not be name of folder. eg file://Xp-pro1/loox

    No sharename gave an error.
