Google WirelessWe love rumors and hearsay, they’re the frosting to our mobile-phone-cake. And this new rumor is about as speculative as frosting gets (wait, what?). It seems that Ofcom’s announcement that they will be auctioning off part of the UK’s 900Mhz wireless frequency spectrum has fired up the rumor mill, via The Guardian.

Ofcom is planning to take back a slice of the 900Mhz frequency-pie from Vodafone and O2 in order to re-purpose the spectrum for 3G use – and auction the spectrum off to other operators in 2009. So, if The Guardian is on point, Google could be making a play for yet another wireless market – the UK.

We’re not sure what to make of this one. Google certainly has the cash to go after the UK wireless market, and owning their own wireless network would put them in a prime position to launch the mystical Google Phone (GPhone) – especially with 3G.  Google is widely believed to be considering a jump on the FCC’s upcoming 700Mhz spectrum auction, so their involvement overseas would make some sense. We’ll keep you guys updated on this space. Stay tuned!
