AT&T Smart Limits taken down – parental controls put kids in danger

AT&T Smart LimitsWhen is a parental control system for mobile phones actually more harmful than helpful? Well, when a system blocks call-backs from 911, we’d say it does a lot more harm than good.

It turns out that the recently launched AT&T (NYSE: T) Smart Limits service did more than give parents extra control over their kids’ wireless usage, it actually put the kids in harm’s way. A critical flaw in the system kept 911 operators from getting through to the “limited” phone in the event that an emergency call were to be disconnected.

AT&T has taken the Smart Limits service offline until they get this little loophole plugged. A good move on the wireless carrier’s part, seeing as how this is potentially a huge liability for the company.
