Mobile phone shortage could hit US soon - pile of mobile phonesWell, if Matthew Hoffman, an analyst from Cowen Research, is on the money, then yes, the US could be facing a shortage of mobile phones. On the surface, it seems like an unlikely event. We’re seeing handfuls of mobile phones being launched each month, and there seems to be an endless supply of mobile phones. What could cause a shortage to the tune of millions of phones?

The research points to the dropping LCD panel supply, combined with current US demand for mobile phones, as possibly precipitating a shortage of handsets in the near future. And, if take into account the growing global demand for mobile phones, it doesn’t seem all that unlikely anymore.

Still, you can be sure that we’ll be upgrading our mobile phones every few months, like it’s going out of style – which might be part of the reason that it is going out of style.
