Australian mobile users getting blocked from MySpace Mobile - down with MySpace

MySpace blocks mobile usersAs if MySpace wasn't having enough trouble keeping up with the looming threat that is Facebook, the social-networking uber-site is blocking Australian mobile users from accessing the MySpace Mobile site. Apparently, MySpace has an exclusive deal with Australian wireless carrier Optus and is blocking mobile access to any user not logging in through the Optus network.

MySpace is also blocking mobile access to any mobile phones not logging in through a contract-carrier in other parts of the world. What are they thinking? In a world where mobile web access is becoming increasingly more widespread, why would MySpace intentionally alienate mobile users? Sure, they'll make some revenue from these exclusive provider deals, but in the end it's the user that determines MySpace's traffic (and subsequently ad-revenue).

Long live Facebook, down with MySpace. If the incredibly jumbled lay-out and spam-filled network weren't enough, this latest move might just be the nail in MySpace's coffin (we're crossing our fingers).
