I want Nokia (NYSE: NOK)’s N-Gage effort to succeed, I really do. Game developers have to struggle with getting a publisher who then has to struggle with operator negotiations with the small hope that their game will give them some money to put bread on the table. For now we know that N-Gage will work on Nseries devices, what about devices using S60 from Nokia’s Enterprise and Mobile Phones division? Take that one step further, what about on devices made by the other phone manufactures using S60?

Why not make S60 more attractive to other people building mobile phones by offering them a chunk of the revenues that the services under the Ovi brand will generate?

I’m sure this question will not be answered, but if I can make people inside NOK talk then I’ve succeed.

    freakin great question, Stefan.

Probably not, at least for the other manufacturers and at least for the time being. Ovi to me sounds so far intended to further increase brand loyalty and leverage sales of even more Nokia handsets.

They will likely open it for their own non-N-Series S60 series phones to some extent and eventually. There was an interesting claim from a Nokia exec. saying there are “architectural reasons” N-Gage cannot be easily introduced to E-Series. Bogus or not, would be interesting to hear more about that claim.

Good question! I have no idea either. But I’m wondering, are there any S60 apps out there that ONLY work on Nokia devices? As far as I know, anything designed for Nokia S60 devices work on all S60 devices regardless of the handset maker. I wonder, is there even a way for develops to block this?

    I think they should.
Having more companies linking themselves to ovi and music store, etc will make this action stronger.
Orange had that dispute with Nokia saying they wouldn’t sell the N81 if Nokia continue with the idea of having the music store, right, well, what if Nokia, Samsung, LG (3 of the top5) starting having this. What would Orange sell?

I think it would give more money (since more handsets have it) and more strength to the OVI brand and to Nokia itself.
