Only 5% of Europeans interested in mobile TV

By Dusan Belic on Sunday, October 7th, 2007 at 5:56 PM PST In Mobile TV, Research

mobile TV illustrated with Nokia N92The single European standard is there (DVB-H), and now we’re waiting for the carriers and handset manufacturers to pitch us about the “wonderful world of mobile TV.” However, it’s worth noting that a recent poll suggests 95% of Europeans are uninterested in mobile TV!

While we still believe the mobile TV is a killer app for mobiles, somehow this makes sense. The technology is still brand new and there are just a few mobile TV enabled devices…

Undoubtedly both operators and handset makers will keep touting the mobile TV as THE technology poised to take off and will keep pushing it with all their advertising money in the coming months. On the other hand, it’s the consumers who need more affordable devices to use the new service regularly. While commuting for instance?

    Quote from your article:
In addition, I guess we could say that only users in Scandinavian countries, Italy and probably UK are savvy enough to use their devices to the max — or that’s at least what most polls suggest.

Excuse me, Dusan? So the rest of us Europeans have no clue on using cutting edge technology?! So the other European countries only use voice calls and SMS on their mobile devices?
The report on the study on Reuters provides no such indications, and neither does the report on SlashPhone, so you might want to enlighten your readers with a few links to studies that prove your claim.

Thanks in advance for your feedback, and in case you can’t justify your claim, I look forward to reading an updated article.

You’re right, I haven’t used the proper wording. Deleted the whole paragraph. I guess I wanted to say that mobile TV and other 3G services are mostly used (as in percentage of population) in Italy, Scandinavian countries and UK.

    Thanks for noticing the error.

DVB-H? Why should we pay for a service which is already free? Yes: Here in germany you have to pay for DVB-H but for DVB-T not.
