Gmail Mobile 1.5 released; Several new features, may work slower

Just recently, Google (NSDQ: GOOG) has updated its Java-based GMail Mobile application. The new version (1.5) adds several improvements, including:

• Easier access to contacts. If you click on a person in your Contacts, you’ll see a photo (if available), the email address, phone numbers and other notes.
• Now you can save unfinished messages in Drafts. The strange thing about this is that the message is actually saved on the phone’s memory and not on the Google’s servers. In addition, you can have only have one draft at any given time.
• GMail Mobile now displays the bandwidth usage every time it loads data. Kinda important if you’re connecting via GPRS.
• Finally, each message is appended with “Sent from Gmail for mobile | mobile.google.com”. Fortunately, you can disable this if you like.

The bad thing about this release is that it seems heavier, hence it’s not working as fast as the earlier version. Also, at the moment it’s only available in English, but I guess we’ll see it available in other languages pretty quickly…
