Verizon Wireless intros over-the-air mobile phone updates

In a move that is sure to make very little difference to the average user, Verizon (NYSE: VZ) Wireless has introduced their over-the-air mobile phone firmware update service. The new service will give Verizon Wireless customers a heads-up when new firmware updates are available for their Verizon-phone - at which point the firmware can then be downloaded directly on to the phone. On-screen prompts can then guide the user through a simple update process.
Verizon Wireless hopes to reduce the number of service requests by proactively updating firmwares through the phone itself - obviating the need to visit a brick-and-mortar store to have an update performed by a Verizon tech. The over-the-air service will be available in select phones this year, with more phones slated to jump on-board through 2008.
Hey, it’s a step in the right direction. Not a huge step, but a step nonetheless.
