RIM sues LG over phone names; Wants to be the only “berry” maker

By Dusan Belic on Friday, November 9th, 2007 at 7:22 AM PST In LG, RIM (Research in Motion)

RIM’s BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) devices are among the top selling business-centric phone in the U.S. and are steadily gaining some traction overseas. So it doesn’t surprises RIM wants to protect its brands as much as possible.

BlackberriesAnd now they’ve decided to go against LG and their “Black Label” line which has such phones as Chocolate Strawberry and Black Cherry. Apparently, it’s impossible for RIM to see these devices co-exist with their BlackBerry phones, even though we have such carrier as Verizon (NYSE: VZ) offering both RIM’s devices alongside LG Chocolate series. Users may get confused, and buy other device, hence RIM is asking to court for the destruction of all LG goods with Pearl, Berry or Black in their names.

Now this is getting ridiculous. RIM wants to have all “berries.” C’mon guys, what’s next – to dominate all the fruit names? :)

Anyway, this isn’t the first time RIM is suing a company over a name. Earlier, we saw them confronting Samsung over BlackJack. Meaning, it’s not just the fruit RIM wants to protect, it’s also the color!

I would recommend them to better invest the money into the R&D for the new 9xxx series phones, rather than on lawyers. We’ll see where this goes…
