ZXing, Google’s open source QR code reader

Google will include an application called ZXing (zebra crossing) in an upcoming release of their Android SDK and will also create a separate J2ME verison. If any company can make QR codes popular in America, then this is it. QR codes are little boxes that can store URL’s, text, phone numbers and can be accessed by any camera phone. Example case scenario: You see an ad for a movie in either a magazine or a poster on the wall, you take out your Android equipped device, scan the QR code and now your web browser loads takes you to a website where you can download the trailer.
QR codes took off in Asia, but America and Europe have been lagging behind. Will ZXing be the breakthrough that finally changes the status quo?
I’m going to have to say no, but I really wish it was yes.

One can only hope so. We always hear about all those funky things that are supposed to make out lives easier, more fun, more interactive but then we hear “It’s a success in Asia but a failure in Europe and America”. WHY ???. I don’t think we’re that much different from Harajuku girls. True…we don’t make ourselves look like anime or “Hello Kitty” characters but we do strive for the same technology. I think America and Europe is TOO CORPORATE where in Asia it’s the customer first approach.

This is a repeat. Google has tunnel vision. They need people that think outside box.
If Google thought this out, why wouldn’t they want to control revenue from both a direct and indirect system?
Why not offer the brands, their customers, the option of both worlds? Why? Brands could change their offering without changing the code on their product.
Why not offer a mobile reader that lets the consumer click on multiple types of codes and other things.
IMO, the NeoReader offers the end to end solution for consumers.
Google needs to take another look at mobile interaction. Why? There are more than just codes to click on. What happens when I walk down the street and there are no codes to click on? What if I say the restaurant name into the browser? What about RFID? What about keywords, logos, trademarks?
If Google wants to offer the best, end to end for the consumer, they need to offer direct and indirect solutions for their customers and the ability to click on multiple types of symbologies, and keywords, logos, trademarks, RFID, from the mobile device.
IMO, they are a smart group, they need to think about what they want to offer their customers and what they can do for the end user. Anything less would be worthless to the consumer.
