Unlock your Samsung BlackJack II’s integrated GPS receiver to work outside of TeleNav

By Will Park on Monday, November 26th, 2007 at 3:13 PM PST In AT&T, Applications, Developer, Samsung, Technologies, Windows Mobile

Samsung BlackJack II gets GPS unlocker to work outside of TeleNav - GPS ActivatorThe good news is that the new Samsung BlackJack II rocks a full-fledged SiRF III GPS receiver – none of that cell-tower signal triangulation stuff here. The bad news, unfortunately, is that the GPS hardware in the BlackJack II is locked-down to only work with the bundled TeleNav software (AT&T (NYSE: T)’s way of getting more TeleNav revenue). You see, there’s this driver, called GPS Intermediary Driver (GPSID), that Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) uses to serve as the communications middle-man between the GPS hardware and applications that need to access the hardware. While the GPSID driver seems to be configured to work with the TeleNav software and Windows Live Search, there’s no provision for any other application to make use of the SiRF III GPS module.

Well, BlackJack 2 hopefuls will be glad to hear that the MoDaCo Smartphone GPS Activator will open up the GPS hardware on your Samsung BlackJack II (and probably the Motorola Q9h) to a host of GPS-enabled applications. The MoDaCo hack will open up the COM4 port for GPS access, allowing you to use associate your favorite apps like Virtual Mobile Earth or Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Maps with the GPS unit.

Turns out, the MoDaCo Smartphone GPS Activator also Application Unlocks your Windows Mobile 6.0 Standard handset. That means you can re-order the applications on your Start Menu – bonus!

Oh, and if any Motorola (NYSE: MOT) Q9h owners out there want to give this utility a go, please drop us a line and let us know how it works.

Over-The-Air install:
Point your mobile browser to: http://modaco.com/gpsactivatorbj2

On-device CAB install:
Run this CAB file from your handset: http://content.modaco.net/MoDaCo.SmartphoneGPSActivator.COM4.CAB

Computer installation:
Run this executable from your PC: http://content.modaco.net/Setup.MoDaCo.SmartphoneGPSActivator.COM4.EXE

Props to Paul for this awesome hack!

I’ve had 3 Samsung SGH-i607 phones (in 2007) and the SGH-i607 does not have GPS built in…
I’m now on my 3rd Samsung SGH-i617 (one way or another I end up breaking ‘em) and the GPS worked out of the box with Google Maps Mobile on all 3.
I downloaded the usual ‘hacks’ and they all worked fine, with the exception of OmapClock.
None of the links provided by any of the Blackjack II user sites had a version of OmapClock which worked on my SGH-i617.
I finally got an older version of OmapClock from i607.org, and it works as intended. I have mine set at 276mhz and the speed increase is noticeable. Mine locks up at higher setting, also sometimes music will not play at 276mhz, in which case slowing the speed to 252mhz seems to do the trick!
All in all I am quite pleased with this phone!
On a final note, why would anyone want to use this phone: 1) Without a data plan; 2) On a network slower than at&t?
In my area, at&t has the best coverage, & the fastest network! Speeds over 500kbps are the norm!

  8. Metallic-Force says:

YOU CAN USE GOOGLE MAPS ON THE BLACKJACK 2 without a
    DATA PLAN.

Just connect your phone to your computer and allow the phone internet from your computer, and like that GOOGLE maps downloads and SAVES the maps you viewed on your phone.

But for some reason, when I disconnect my phone from my comp, and the go to “use gps” google app tells me “no gps receiver detected” Iam using BJ2.

  9. Alainater says:

ok when i put the .cab file on my blackjack2 it doesn’t show up can someone please help me!!!!!!

  10. Raj says:

The google maps works out of the box. You dont need to unlock the gps. The Software which uses Microsoft GPSID should work including google maps. When you try to acquire the GPS satelite be patient it takes about 10-15 Minutes when you are outside( Dont try inside, After it acquires the signal first time next time is few seconds.

    Alainater,

go to m.google.com/maps and download the maps software directly.

  11. Dri says:

Do I need to pay something for using the GPS app (like 3g connection)?

  12. Dri says:

Do I need a data plan for using Google Maps?

P.S.:(Excuse -me for the first comment)

  13. Worke says:

So I need to go online to install Google Maps….but what I’m confused about is that….does Google Maps need a data plan after I install it?….if I start using the GPS with Google Maps, is it going to connect to the internet each time?

  14. Pete says:

Yes you need dataplan and active connection to data for GE to open. Even with a data plan, if you are out of service area it won’t start up. GE can download megabytes of mapping data per minute, so if you are not on an unlimited plan this would get expensive fast.

I just bought a Blackjack II. I would love to have GPS enabled on my phone and I m sure, I have landed in the right area. Is it possible for me to unlock my BlackJack Phone and use GPS for Free. I saw a comment saying that TomTom cab files was available. If so, where and how to use it? any other software avaible?

  16. bill says:

I bought a bjII from the ATT store on the weekend, with a data plan. I didn’t sign up to telenav. I used the internet explorer to go to google, download the mobile version of google maps, went outside into my yard and it found my location within about 2 minutes.

The acid test will be the next time I fly cross country and decide not to bring my garmin with me for the rental car. I’m all in favor of flying with as little as possible these days.

  17. anita says:

I have a blackjack II. I don’t have internet on my phone. Do I need to have internet to use the GPS? And when I try to d/l the program on the computer. It says “Application Manager can run only when a mobile device is connected”. I did connected my blackjack with the USB cable to the computer but I don’t know why it doesn’t work. Please help. Thanks a lot I appreciate it.

  25. Michael says:

Well I had a better look at my Samsung i617T (Blackjack 2 and it seems to already be unlocked. Under Menu and then options then GPS settings I have a choice to let Windows set it up or manual. Under manual you have those settings anyway.
    This is the Australian version.

  29. jump_daddy33 says:

Go to this site for info on how to install Garmin XT. It has step by step instructions on how to install it. I know it works because I just installed on my 16GB micro SD card. http://www.myblackjack2.com/forum/how_to/topic_99/
You have to follow the steps closely or it will not work. GPS is very accurate, just like a Garmin NUVI. It comes with all the US & Canada maps.

Any good gps software for 6.1?

  31. magicone58 says:

Gagan asked:”Does that mean we can install Garmin GPS software on Blackjack I607?”

I am not sure if the i607 has integrated GPS; however the i617 does and you should be able to use Garminn Mobile XT maps, after all it’s built for windows mobile. You can most certainly use NavTec maps (Garmin). Once installed, there are no usage charges.
