iPhone gets native MMS!

Apple iPhone MMS applicationIt feels like we’re always complaining of the lack of MMS (that’s picture-messaging for the lay-folks) on our iPhones. But, we have to admit that we never really used picture messaging on any phone, or smartphone, in the past, and we don’t miss its absence on the iPhone. But hey, it’s fun to knock Cupertino for not including such a basic feature on the iPhone.

So, this one goes out to all you iPhone owners that actually miss the MMS functionality on the iPhone. A celver third-party application developer/hacker over at ModMyiFone has released a natively-installed MMS application for the iPhone. Of course, you could have simply emailed all your pictures to your friends, but this method is just so much easier. We’re loving the truly Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)-esque look of the MMS application.

Keep in mind, this is a beta application – so (1) only outbound MMS messages are working, (2) you’ll have to setup the application with your carrier’s MMSC info, and (3) you’ll have to enable MMS on your wireless plan. Oh, and as beta applications go, this one’s a bit buggy, so do what you will.

Grab the MMS application from your Installer.app in the ModMyiFone repository. Add the MMI repository to your source list to get access to MMi’s iPhone software – here’s how.

I can not see why people say they never used MMS on there previous smartphone etc. This feature is used more than any other feature on the phone if you use your camera or video recorder. If you take a snap shot of something and want your friend to see it NOW. Why would you send it through an e-mail. Most people, yes MOST people do not have e-mail on there phone but they do have MMS. Apple’s decision to keep MMS off the iphone is silly. There concern is to not have people sending I-Tunes librarys back and forth, but if they would use a simple size file blocker, this would eliminate the concern. Most pictures are much smaller than a song etc. This is the only thing deterring me from purchasing one. SwirlyMMS is a pain to use. They need one integrated in just like the SMS feature.

I think the point is more about the future of picture messaging. It will die soon enough as people start to embrace the smartphone revolution. I think Apple’s decision to leave MMS off the iPhone was, in part, motivated by its desire to force the market to re-evaluate how pictures are sent.

In my opinion, smartphones are the way to go. It’s hard to imagine anyone that wouldn’t find a smartphone more useful than a dumbphone, and statistics show that consumers as a whole are indeed warming up to that idea – smartphone sales are increasing even as the global economy tanks.

There will always be people that want a phone that just does the basic calling, voicemail, and maybe text message or picture message tasks. But, I would argue that this particular segment will quickly be outnumbered by consumers willing to embrace technology and advance their own perspectives accordingly.

Personally, I’ve never used MMS. I have convinced most of my friends and family to get a smartphone with email capability, so MMS is useless to me (especially at 50 cents a pop).

MMS is still currently available and MOST people that have “dumb phones”. Just because you don’t use MMS Will Park doesn’t mean everyone else should be forced to use email. The iPhone is capable of using MMS yet Apple wants to control everything you do with your iPhone.

who cares what MMS messages cost? if you have a smartphone then you probably have an extra 40-50 dollar add on to your bill for internet. if you can afford that then you shouldn’t care how much a MMS message costs. plus MMS is so much quicker anyways! besides who wants to open a email app and wait for your inbox to load, then browse through them to find the pic? not I, knowing that MMS is way faster. EMAIL IS OLDER THAN MMS!
