In my opinion, smartphones are the way to go. It’s hard to imagine anyone that wouldn’t find a smartphone more useful than a dumbphone, and statistics show that consumers as a whole are indeed warming up to that idea – smartphone sales are increasing even as the global economy tanks.

There will always be people that want a phone that just does the basic calling, voicemail, and maybe text message or picture message tasks. But, I would argue that this particular segment will quickly be outnumbered by consumers willing to embrace technology and advance their own perspectives accordingly.

Personally, I’ve never used MMS. I have convinced most of my friends and family to get a smartphone with email capability, so MMS is useless to me (especially at 50 cents a pop).
