Samsung Ace SPH-I325

Who says carriers can’t keep secrets? Just look at Sprint (NYSE: S) who surprised many of us with the newly revealed Samsung Ace SPH-I325 phone. The phone isn’t actually THE masterpiece of the Korean giant, but it’s worthy addition to the carrier’s portfolio nevertheless. There’s a 1.3 MP camera, full QWERTY keyboard, QVGA screen and (probably) the microSD expansion slot. Windows Mobile 6 Standard edition is running the world-roamin’ show — yap both CDMA and GSM radios are built inside this baby. Guess you could call it the WorldJack, as in BlackJack World Edition. ;)

even though it’s a nice phone, I found contradictions on the tech specs for it. Supposedly on some sites for the same model, the phone supports all 4 GSM bands: 850/900/1800/1900 in addition to the CDMA mode exclusive for sprint. Sadly, when I received my S.ACE phone, it says that it only supports GSM 900/1800 bands.

I did not think it’d be a problem, but I am now traveling internationally and the SIM card for the local provider is useless as it works only under the 850MHz band. For a phone that cost me a pretty penny, being stuck with international cdma roaming is pretty upsetting. I’ve been forced to get an additional GSM phone to support this frequency.

If there is a way to unlock or alter the bands on the ACE, I’ll be more than happy to hear about it. And aside from this little problem, the phone itself is great. I absolutely love it, aside from this issue.
