Nokia patents MagSafe like charger for their mobile devies

Apple fans who have purchased a laptop in the past year or two are familiar with MagSafe technology which dislodges the charging cable if enough force is applied; this is enabled by the use of magnets. Nokia (NYSE: NOK) is trying to do the same thing, but on their mobile phones. I don’t really see how this can work. An Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) laptop weighs at least 2 pounds, a mobile phone hovers around 3.5 ounces. They must be using some really weak magnets?

I love MagSafe on my MBP!! I can’t even say how great it is – it’s saved my laptop from an early demise on several occasions. In fact, my previous PowerBook met an early death due to a kicked power-cord.
But, you’re right, Stefan. The magnet would have to be weak enough to disengage from a device that weighs a handful of ounces.
Still, it’s an awesome idea for any gadget, even phones.
they are probably thinking of making their phones heavier………..hehehe
It is probably to make the connection more secure. When charging in a car mount, my e90 does not maintain a solid connection, and will not consistently charge. This would definitely help.
