Photos: Sony Ericsson K850i vs Nokia N82, which one will you pick?
By Dusan Belic on Friday, December 28th, 2007 at 9:13 AM PST In Devices, Nokia, Sony Ericsson

It’s holiday season and that’s the right time to get a new camera phone. If you can afford it, you should go for the handset with 5 megapixel camera and a Xenon flash. Two devices come to mind instantly – Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) K850i and Nokia (NYSE: NOK) N82. While the former is certainly easier to carry around (it’s smaller), the latter is a smartphone and we all know that opens a whole new world of 3rd-party apps. Still, some people may find all they need in the Sony Ericsson’s model.
Anyway, we have tons of photos of the two devices standing side by side which will hopefully help choose the device you like better…

Ciao Dusan,
I have a N82 and I pretty happy with it. The camera is really fast compared to the N95, and starting applications is pretty snappy.
My only complains are that is a bit long and that Nokia should use the real estate better, second that Nokia should have used the N95 screen size. Having all these features deserve a better screen.

I would personally go for the Sony for their expertise in Cybershot imaging technology over the years. It looks much more unique than the Nokia does and bit slimmer. It all depends on a user’s needs though. If the camera is not as important to him/her as do other features like GPS and WiFi, then N82 should be the choice and vice versa (note that the Sony doesn’t have GPS or WiFi)!
I wood for shore go for Nokia N82 , you get much more phone then Sony ericsson , the funny thing is that the camera in N82 also are better with Carl Zeiss optic and xeonflash. SE was good for 2-3year ago but have lost the battle of Camera and Music phones .
Big Bonus you get in N82 are GPS and great wifi too
@Abdul
SE has one of the worst 5MP camera phones on the market now (check out gsmarena.com’s 5MP review). As Jonnie stated, the were king several years ago, but they are now near the bottom.
Even if you have only used an SE for the past several years, it’s hard to turn away from the N82:
-smartphone
-wifi
-gps
-3.5mm jack
-stereo speakers
…and it is only slightly more expensive than the K850i. It should be a no brainer which phone people pick -
Can only agree with newtype2011 post, N82 is the best choice
I pick N82 for shoore
i will pick k850i…becoz it looks like new year’s mob while n82 looks older…
This is one easy choice = The N82
I bought n82. I’m really hapy, it’s fantastic! I got everything in one.
wifi
memory card
bluetooth
fm tuner
music player
gps
camera incl xenon flash
videos
games
nice interface
anything else?
I prefer SE’s interface much more than nokia, plus sony ericsson has better style
newtype2011
1.you seriously dont know what your talking about.
2.sony ericsson are one of the leading manufacturers
3.sony ericsson camera’s are GOOD
lol louis
you must kidding SE have less then 9% of mobilemarket Nokia have over 40% and sale over 1 million devies evry day. But you right about nr 3 SE have real good camera but Nokia have better .
N82 are much better choice and it have even inbuild GPS
nokia sucks.
This argument must be a joke! compare the briliant k850 excelent sound and picture quality with also a good software interface and long battery life, with the rubish n82? despite the features of the n82 the battery doesn’t last long enough for you to enjoy
I’ve seen quite some reviews on both of the phones and some comparing sites. When the phone companies were still battling the 3 megapixel fight, Sony Ericsson came out as the winner with the K800i. This time however, I think the N82 shoots better pictures. The colors are more realistic and it gives nicer photo’s to look at. A lot of the K850i pictures give a white blur over the photo when there are white objects on the image (like a part of the sky).

Well here in Sweden they made a big test 2 weeks ago with all 5MP cameraphones and the winner was the Nokia N82 . From magasin Mobil and it also have GPS and today with N-gage live is awsome good and easy to share evrything here http://ovi.nokia.com/ovi/app/ovi/web/index/
surely N82……..
k850i camera is the worst 5mp camera..
I think the Sony Ericsson K850i is the better than the Nokia N82.
Absolutely K850i is better.
@newtype2011
according to gsmarena.com, if you really read the forum they tested the k850i with the beta firmware so the camera driver sucks!! but right now they have the updates and camera was working fine! and still they’re working on it, i have the k850i and the N82 for comparison, i wasted a lot of money for these two models, but i was happy with the k850i when you print the pictures, the images printed from my n82 sucks!
TIP: dont rely on others comments, it will be better to use it yourself so you will find out, and for me since i have these two units, i vote for the k850i because i dont use my phone for internet browsing..
The nokia n82 is better than any sony ericsson. purely because the n82 is better quality plus it has more features and you can connect it directly to your tv and watch your videos & pic’s. Because the quality of the camera, you don’t loose pic resolution on the big screen. ive had both, n82 any day, sorry s-ericsson!
have you tried printing your pictures?
To be honest i don’t print, i just take my sim card to a retail store & get them to do it,my prints seem fine though?
that’s nice to hear sir.
bacause i use the two units, i like the prints from my k850i.
Ofcorse the N82 and
The Nokia N82 multimedia computer has been awarded the ‘Best Mobile Imaging Device in Europe 2008′ by TIPA (Technical Image Press Association) – Europe’s largest photo and imaging press association.
“The Nokia N82 is a compact multimedia computer that integrates GPS, web, video and music functions around a 5 Megapixel camera with a high-speed, f/2.8 autofocus lens,” the TIPA jurors said. “This Carl Zeiss Tessar focuses from 10cm to infinity and produces sharp prints up to and beyond A4 size. Several scene modes are also available to optimize the Nokia N82 for great images, whether shooting portraits or night shots,” TIPA continued. Other Nokia N82 features highlighted by the jurors are the Xenon flash and 20X digital zoom.
SE phones are far behind
was that from an award body made by nokia? LOL!!!
try it for yourself Patrick im using both of the units i love them both because of their diff functionality, but in terms of the camera performance i like my k850 than my n82
Hi,
Just I wanna say and for sure that no smartphone with 5mp camera in the market can beat oe even touch the quality of Nokia N82 in terms of camera shooting and overall performance such as GPS, WiFi and TV output funtions. NO doubt that the SE produce nice phones but all these are without O/S and with no features like that nokia’s smartphones does.
Note: For printing quality really I didn’t test any one of them but the printing quality depends on no. of DPI that pic has, so just for while right click on SE pics then properties then go to summary and check the DPI of the pics of SE and then do the same for Nokia’s phones (Multimedia computer).
Regards,,
Nokia Lover
Try printing it first! and you will see a lot of difference.
I’m getting the best results from my K850i than my girlfriends N82.
Let’s see when Sony ericsson releases the C905
haha i bet your nokia phones will suck!!
Yeah but i’d rather plug my phone in, & show my pics & vids to my friends & family on the big screen, which not even the c905 can do!
Im not a printing person, but If i do want pics, i get a shop to do them, they come out fine.
plus the jack which connects your phone to a tv, also connects to your car head unit with a double ended lead, so you can listen to mp3’s from your phone.
The c905 doesnt come with satnav either. sorry S.E
foolz n 82 can take much better pics than k850 cnt u see? u can seeeeeeeeeeee here………….. http://www.mobileburn.com/review.jsp?Page=5&Id=3899.in the case of os & features undoubtely n82 is best. for sonyerric k850 user dont u knw n82 won the europe best camera mobile award? so whos camera is the best??????
I tested taking pictures with ericsson k 850 and Im always have to take it with midlight portrait because they are dark even with xenon f.that doesnt happens with k790.. I like more the design in k850 than n82 because nokia make some bricks, but in functions maybe nokia wins but in pictures k850 is best, objetivity here to argue some of the internet ericsson nokia battles, if the price is lower in ericsson then it is better because is fighting vs a more expensive phone.(included n95 too) and even with pictures we never know the best , i took a picture with a n73 and is best than n95 & k850 taken from the same place. strange? but happens.
its very difficult to say which is best.if you go for only digital camera like photo then k850i is the only option but if you want music and camera both features in your mob then n-82 is the right choice.
n82 is really sucks..!! k850i have a better camera and its has shake themes…. when c905 release nokia will become the loser..!!! i promise..!!! SONY ERICSSON RULES
haha, so this is not over yet!
I stopped using my k850 and N82 for taking pictures, why? because i use my a700.
Since you always argue and fight which is better one.
which is better from the two phones?
why wont you try to take a picture using the N82 and K850, same scenery, same mode, same settings.
after taking some pictures, print it and you will see the difference.
you will not be able to check the difference if you will just be looking at the lcd screen, i agree that the display of n82 is better, and it’s packed with wifi or other bullshits that i dont even use, but if you’re after quality of images i love my k850 better than my n82.
——————————————————-
take it this way:
camcorders are not made to take still pictures
still cameras are not made to take movie clips
Cellular phones are made to make calls and send text messages, cameras are just added features, so are the movie and music playbacks.
Pls nokia n82 users i want to buy n82 but, i want to know if it trully have an auto-rotate screen as it feature.I also wants to know if it can take microSDHD external memory of 32GB.
Sony Ericsson k850 is better
try to take a photo without flash with sony ericsson, o yes you see no noise in the picture
sony ericsson is a young company in mobile commercial
but nokia not young
I have Sony ericsson W910 & i love my phone because my phone solve all of my requirments
mation sensor, perfect 2MP camera, and…
I never select Nokia instead of Sony Ericsson
I (sony Ericsson) love My phone
i cherish sony ericsson k850i more than any other phone now because of its picture quality.
well due to a malfunction of my k850 the phone company let me pay the diference of price to pick the n95 and Im very pleased the only advantages of the ericsson was, whiting messages (even with that small buttons )the functions of xenon flash, the battery for me last the same, but ericsson take more fast pics, but nokia has lots o fatures that k850 doesnt have, the wifi is exelents mlore than n93 and n80. the video amazing in the n95. the k850 change setting while talking been touched by your ear in the 3 touch buttons, fingerprints are the same in both phones , I prefer the n95 definitly. even is more slow but is better for music and video and manage documents. if n82 is the same as n95 and other upgrades then is better than k850…
The Nokia N82 superphone ofcorse !!
I used both phones. Both phones are ugly. If you want to check the picture quality, the best way to do is to print them and compiare, I found that SE K850 gives better images than N82. But the keypad of SE k850 sucks! And consedering overall performance N82 is the best. Am not sure about other countries, but In sri Lanka the price of K850 is about Rs. 45,000 and price of a N82 is Rs. 58,000 ,so, K850 is much more popular than N82 in sri lanka(But not much as popular as N95)
Sony Ericsson lovers (which i used to be, they are good phones) but your phones need to be updated with all the features the N82 has.
Until they are i will stick with nokia. & if you are refering to the camera, The carl Zeiss Tessar lense is truely awsome & the technology comes from their camcorda range (says it all really)! so stop squabbling & get a N82!
Then stick with your N82, why can’t people accept what they have and what they can’t get?
i will chose k850i as they have better shape better design and Looks Cool
I chose the N82 because of much much better
multiemedia phone and even better camera .
The N82 look much cooler to.
sony k850i is the best phone
actually i have them both and they are both very good but if i had to keep one i would keep the sonyericsson.
although the nokia is a good phone with a really good specifications it loses the battle against th sonyericsson. nokia is old style and the SE is gonna be the new generation phones. the gsm arena review is very not true when i take pictures i always take them with the k850i coz it has a camera that u cant even compare the nokias camera with it. so i say nokia are good phones but they need years to achieve what sonyericsson has already achieved in the sound and cameras of there phones. thank you everybody.
guyz i thnk n82 z bettr bcoz it can do wat sony ericson cant evn thnk auf. .
n82 can play avi files,wma,mp4 etc files. . .which k850 cant . .
n82 has much softwarez whereas k850 z a java cell and can only load java applications . . .
internet n n82 z much fastr then k850 and n82 z a fastr downloader then sony.e
shapewise both r bar phnez . . .so not to considr that. . . yup i doubt that if camera based comptetion cumz thn n82 wud b a bit behind sony.e . . . . .but 90% people trust nokia . .gud luk
Yeah right…..
nokia pioneered in this line of business, so they should be better than sony erricson.
good luck too man, on the money you are spending for (junk) as i will say,
these are mobile phones, they’re meant to be a cellular phone, \
not an internet browser (get a laptop),
not a camera (get a Digital Single Lens Reflex Camera)
i’m not using these phones anymore..
i shifted to samsung g810.. Shit.. well everyone has to make up their mind, before you buy something be sure you’ll live up to it.. HAHA!
have a great one guys
