O2 customer numbers soar on the back of iPhone interest

This isn’t a post about how many iPhones have been sold (since people don’t leave that kind of data laying about!), but rather about the knock-on effect in O2 (NYSE: TEF) stores in the UK. It’s been reported that there has been a three-fold (that’s 3x for those of you that like to abbreviate) increase in the number of people coming in to stores since the wonderphone’s release….

Whilst there have been some anecdotal reports that the iPhone may not have done the volumes expected, this ‘pebble in a pond’ radiating effect on sales of other devices, accessories, and tariffs, can only be a good thing.

My opinion (for what it’s worth) is that securing the iPhone was another master-stroke by O2, following hotly on the heels of the launch of “The O2” (formerly the Millenium Dome) – for anyone that has been there, you will no doubt have been impressed at the experience! Having pulled that not inconsequential feat off, O2 then secured the most sought-after (if not most-hyped) device since time started, and have now boosted customers in-store! Amazing!

Well Done O2 UK!

What a positive spin on a bit of a disaster for the iphone in the UK. If you can find 1 positive thing about o2 winning the iphone contract, thats about the 1 thing! I agree, its great for o2 to have increased traffic in their stores – but it is rather a conselation prize. Why is everyone trying to put a positive spin on anything about the iphone on every single blog!?

Chris I can feel your hatred for the iPhone.
    It is powerful.
Come on over to the dark side Chris.

    Hi guys,

I don’t have a positive or negative view on the iphone – besides which everyone will form their own opinion about it anyway!

However, I do think O2 have managed to pull off a couple of amazing pieces of PR/Marketing in the shape of both the O2 (Dome) and the iPhone – sometimes the bigger picture is the bigger win – and in that respect I think O2 are having a very good 12 months or so!!

    :o )

Here the answer why >> It’s been reported that there has been a three-fold (that’s 3x for those of you that like to abbreviate)

Most stores are believed to have missed iPhone targets by some distance, with a typical-sized O2 store selling just one iPhone per week. However, that appeared to change in the final seven days, with O2 staff reporting a big upturn, with many stores selling one per day, and even more in large city centre

One Carphone staffer said: ‘The iPhone was poor. We work in one of the bigger stores in our area and only sold one or two over the Christmas period. Our target last week was to sell 36 and we only sold one.’
