Dell and Google to work together on cellphone?
By Will Park on Wednesday, January 30th, 2008 at 2:17 PM PST In Android, Devices, GPhone, Partnerships, Rumors
Partnerships between industry giants are a dime a dozen these days. The latest speculation involves Dell and Google (NSDQ: GOOG) getting cozy in preparation for a mobile phone launch at Mobile World Congress (formerly 3GSM) in Barcelona next month.
The speculation comes from “senior industry sources” but Google has denied any such rumors.
As you may remember, Google was rumored to be bringing a mobile phone to market as the Google Phone (GPhone/gPhone), but those rumors were quashed when Google announced their open-source mobile phone platform, Android. We’re not sure if this latest rumor is just a confused interpretation of Dell’s intention to introduce an Android-based handset in Barcelona, or if Google really is going to launch a GPhone in conjunction with Dell.
If anything, we’d think Dell would be introducing an Android handset next month.

Hmph,
I’m looking at GSMA Mobile World Congress Exhibitor Listing and I cannot find Dell. Google has no stand, only 2 meeting rooms. Can you verify this Android rumour?
If “Dell” cannot be found, would it be demoed on some other company stand?
Wondering,

The Android rumor is just my own speculation based on the possibility that these “sources” are just mis-interpreting what they’ve “heard”.
As with all rumors, we’ll have to wait and see what happens.
If Google does choose to launch a phone in conjunction with Dell, their meetings room would be a good way to give exclusives to reporters/bloggers.
We’re going to find out in 2 weeks if this is true or not, but the fact of the matter is that if it doesn’t get announced at MWC it doesn’t mean much. Dell used to be awesome at making PDA’s and since Android is pretty much free for anyone to do with as they please it might make sense for them to get back into the game.
Who knows! One to watch for.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Dell did get back into the PDA business, they’ve kinda fallen out of it over the years. I’m not so sure of a deal with Google, maybe they’ll use Android though.
There will be no such Dell/Google show at the GSMA event. You’ll find a very good post about that at
