Watch it! Nokia N95 8GB cloned to perfection

By Dusan Belic on Saturday, February 2nd, 2008 at 6:25 AM PST In Clone/rip, Devices, Nokia

Fake Nokia N95 8GB

Certain Chinese handset manufacturers are getting better and better in their cloning efforts. Lately we’ve spotted an almost identical “version” of the Nokia (NYSE: NOK)’s flagship N95 8GB smartphone. As you can see from the image above — and more images after the jump — the fake device has some weird-looking buttons and also shady marks. Other than that, it’s practically the same. Except that the built quality isn’t there, and neither is the mobile OS (Symbian S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1) and the suite of pre-installed apps. So watch out folks, this is getting seriously out of control…

Cant they stop this crime from Chinese handset manufacturers?

  2. Afinis says:

It has a microSD slot…stupid chinese dudes(except if it has both the hard drive and the microSD slot then…brilliant chinese dudes! And why not write Nseries on the back? Is this going to save them from going to prison?

  3. Andre says:

Yes I cant understand why not the world stop this Chines deceitfulness ! Why cant the rest of world bojkott evrything from China?
This is how they do to animals 2008 and the same to consumers from rest of the world.

  4. Reptile says:

If they can mod the N95 to include both an 8gb hard drive and a microSD slot, just imagine what else they’re capable of.

I really wonder though, about the reasoning behind it. Are there no good handset designers in all of its 3.0 billion citizens? Nokia phones’ best feature is the fact that they cram so many features into one phone, but the Chinese companies could easily grab the same features as Nokia phones, but improve the design and UI by a lot. Instead, they choose to just copy the phone exactly.

  5. lemetelu says:

I actually see these around everyday. It looks the same from the outside, but doesn’t perform as well. It doesnt have dual processors (u know, the reason n95 is expensive). No sellers of these will try to fool you it’s the real thing and the clones doesn’t pretend to be original other than boast it’s almost alike (type a). I think it’s a culture thing they got about copying things. Although, some like these are on the extreme side. You should see their n73.. it looks so real except for the chinese characters.

  6. yea says:

China has stolen tech from the west for years. They even stole GM’s colorodo truck. If you steal somone elses products you do not have to spend the millions and in the case of cars billions of dollars in development. If you don’t have to recoup that initial investment you can sell everything for less…. especially if you use slave labor… GO CHINA!!!

  7. marquin says:

i have purchase a china clone of the nokia n95 and now it des not work! can any one re instal the OS in the phone.

  8. Duped girl says:

I just got fooled and bought a fake nokia n95 8gb phone. I am so upset and feel like crying. I had been trying to fix it for days until I just read this article. I feel like an idiot!!!!

  9. Raidium says:

This is seriously outta hand! Someone needs to stop these chinese douchbags! Most people know not to buy a cloned handset but then again, most people can’t tell the difference. They really need to sue these stupid chinese idiots for using their name! Nokia is also to blame because they aren’t takeing any action against them!

  10. russ says:

cloned N95 8GB is more affordable, cheaper than the original nokia N95 8GB,yet have same feature’s,quality, capabilities and it also consumers choice because of the cheap price., here in the philippines the original handset cost P32,000(phil. currency) unlike the cloned one cost only 6,000. that is why they dont stop manufacturing phones like this,

  11. Luis says:

I just got a fake one and i only found out cuz the serial number cudnt be found on their computers at the companie mine was made so well ididnt even kno it wa fake the only ting was that the tools file isnt in the phone and i cant get the wireless router to work, i like the phone regardless but i wish i had known still cuz iwould like the orignal instead

  12. russ says:

    is’it really 8GB???

  13. dj paddy says:

was almost getting the money from my pocket when i checked the phone close up and suspected it was a fake.

1 the secondary lense is not properly aligned on the face of the phone

2 the transparent screen protector is not clear but smokey.

3 there is no mention of where it’s made at the sim slot.

4 the quality of the gloss finish is not up to standard.

5 it is way cheaper than on other shops.

so yes there are fakes here in kenya and remember when the deal is too good THINK TWICE.

  14. Micky says:

There is another clone out, this time, another 8GB cloned N95, made in Korea, and this time, is cosmetically identical to the untrained eye.

Checkout the threads over on N95users.com/forum where you can find photos of these clones, and read about other people who have purchased these thinking they were the real thing.

This is becoming a Global problem now, and to which has encouraged myself to contact Nokia about them, thus still waiting a reply.

There are 8 N95 clones on the market place now, all ranging from different levels of detail, and the latest ones even show a result when *#0000# is entered, again to try and fool the unsuspecting buyer.

    Checkout my blog also..

    http://gsi-r.vox.com/

There are links in my blog to the articles I have put a lot of time, and money into researching these clones, and trying to educate people so they know what to look out for when in the market place for a new N95.

The only dead giveaway is the operating software, but with cloned stocks getting mixed in with genuine handsets, even genuine sellers don’t know what they are selling, and many will not open the boxes, switch on the device to find out, because then, they could not sell it as new sealed in the box.!

As said, this is a global problem, and you only have to take a look on eBay.com to see for yourself how much of a problem this really is, with sellers not really knowing what they are selling too, stating in their listings as the N95 8GB they are selling is a scaled down version, when in fact, its not even manufactured by Nokia.

Keep an eye on my blog for updates. There is also a cloned N96 already out, which again, you can find photos on my blog.

    Regards

    Micky

Does anyone know how to spot the difference from a real one and a fake one. I just ordered one that was really cheap and after reading the blog i think i am in for a fake one.

  20. Soon To Be Fooled says:

Can someone list the differences. Hard core proof needed. Not just the ones that the clonning masters have mastered. I need proofs that definately show that it is a fake.

Check out the N95 Smoked Mod here, done with black metal, grey leather, and white OEM material – http://s603rd.blogspot.com/2008/08/n95-classic-smoked-mod.html

There’s also the remix mod, but i prefer the smoked. The remix mod goes with plum oem instead of the grey leather..

  24. callum says:

the only way to find out if the phone is a fake or not is to look at the back wen u slide it up on the real n95 8gb it should have a torques screwdriver bit and on the fake one its a normal phillips

i have got the real 1 and my freind has got the fake you can also tell by the quality of the screen and the loudness of the music the fakes are dead dull and sound rubish and the reals have brilliant screens and loud for music

dont be daft and buy 1 from a real shop like orange o2 tmobile vodafone dnt get 1 of ebay or anywhere like that or even of a freind dont be silly and buy a cheap 1 spend a bit of money and get a original

  25. callum says:

the originas are made in finland

  26. Rajneel Ram says:

    hello guys
its been really long tym since all these things have started….the cloned Nseries of nokia….well im here in Fiji Islands…just wanted to inform the rest of the world that we also have got the cloned N95 8GB being sold here…the only reason people buy the cloned one is because it is very cheap compared to the original one….here in fiji the original N95 is FJ$1799.00 while the fakes are going as cheap as $400.00….well one of my freind has bought it and told me it is very much like the original one….but the only difference is that the camera is only 2.0 megapixel….the rest is same….the ones we have here has even got a Nsereies badge on it at the back….im also planning to buy one…hence i have talked to the owner of the shop who sells theses phones (a chinesses guy). he showed me the phone told me it is 2Mpcamera, 8gb memory and the only reason for being cheap is that it is manufactuered in china……now at this point i also wish to ask the blog readers and the writers does anyone exactly know where all the geniun original nokia phones are manufactured…..here in fiji even if you buy it from the authorised companies like Vodafone..you’ll still see that even the nokia’s they sell is manufactuered in china

    thank you
hope i have not disappointed anyone..

I agree with everything that Rajneel Ram has to say,I sell these Nokia N95 8Gb clones and the Genuine ones and I always let my customers know what they are buying but,I agree that there is not much difference and why would most customers pay from $400 – $700 for the real moden when they can get a replica for around $200 I also think that the gunuine has some minor things that the replica cannot due,but to be honest with you,if you really knew how much it costs to manufacture a real N95 8Gb,You would probably not think to fondly of Nokia for what they are selling them for.(Just think about it)

  27. David says:

    Hi there,

The original Nokia Nseries phones are produced in Finland.
But I found some phone in China which as good as the original. More than that the manufacturer claims that all the details are OEM. No fakes there, but only combined in China.
I don’t think it is wrong to do the real hard-copies of something, but this should be done with a license of the original company. Here the chinese manufacturers are failing.

  28. Luis says:

Motherfu…. chinese, fake ones don’t have WIFI and Bluetooth, the rest is the same as the original, even the carl zeiss optics looks the same, I just got mug in EBAY…. I’m mad

Insightful post, this is the first time i have came across your site, i have RSS’d you

    thanks

  31. Bugger says:

I purchased 2 NokLa N95 8GB mobile phones off ebay, the seller advertised the phone to be an original (stupid gullible me). I have come to terms with being ripped off (my mistake – buyer beware)and do not mind so much that the phones do not have symbian os and is missing a lot of features such as wireless lan,GPS,Video Calling,5mp camera and missing icons from the menu such as Tools.

I would not mind so much if the makers of this phone would include software to be able to install programs to the phone (games/software/themes etc).

Because there is no symbian os I suspect it does not hold a 8GB hard drive, it acts more like a flash card.
When you plug the firewire (mobile end)- USB cable (PC end) to the PC, it instantly picks up on the micro SD memory card inside the phone.
A true nokia (and many other authentic manufactures)will ask for the drivers for the device and will require a data suite to access the phone contents as well as the memory card contents.

I have contacted Nokia regarding “Clone” N95 phones and the reply was a shock to me, “We cannot take any action against makers of Cloned Nokia Phones”.

I would have thought as many of you have thought; Nokia is a trademark name/brand. Any unauthorised reproduction of Nokia products is in breach of trademark. Nokia does not seem to care that these Clones are carrying the Nokia name.

I have always enjoyed Nokia phones (well most of them) and will have to buy an original N95 8GB someday when Nokia retailers lower the price.

I would of paid for a real Nokia if these other Clone options were not around so it would be in Nokia’s best interest to get rid of these Clones and it’s manufactures so that customers can buy authentic phones from Nokia knowing that they have a genuine product covered by warranty.

  32. David says:

    Hi,
I am very sad to hear that you also fallen to this trap and bought the fake Nokia phones.
I almost bought them in the past, but after that, every time I bid on these on eBay, I am ensuring that these are the original ones with all the features like Wi-Fi and GPS. Nokia company itself provides these parts for chinese manufacturers in order to produce the “OEM” versions of the phone which are much cheaper than the original ones, but do not have all the features.
My advice to you, if you bought it through eBay, open a dispute Item not Recieved or significantly different from the described. In this case you will need to send the phones back to the seller and he will have to refund your account with the money you paid.

  33. Bugger says:

Now that’s a no brainer of Nokia to provide parts for Clone Manufacturers to legally reproduce inferior Nokia Mobile phones but hey why stop at parts, why not provide the software as well or at the very least the symbian os.

Thanks David for mentioning to create a dispute, I already thought about that and did not want to go through heaps of BS and wait for paypal to refund my money after I send the mobiles back at my expense. I am willing to chalk this up to a “never again” lesson.

  34. paolo says:

i have seen and tried the fake n95 8gb. it has even a stylus and a touch screen and operates 2 sim card simulteanuously… damn… but too bad, the buttons felt cranky and the operating system is ugly.. and the display is similar to that of old samsung phones… really ugly.!!!

  35. Bugger says:

paola you have seen one (1) Cloned N95 8GB, there are a few Clones of this mobile. The real N95 8GB does not have a touch screen. Visit the Nokia site to view this phone and its features.

  36. dddkkkk says:

Hello guys i buy the cloned nokia n95 8gb , i didn’t know that it was a clone and now i need help because i want to make it work. Please if any body can help me.!

  37. Maqsood says:

This is a bloody cheap quality duplicate item. I bought as if an original item. But now convinced that it is chinese made fake.

I am worried that if the software due to any reason fails then from where to download again. The camera quality, memeory is 242 MB and not 8GB. The chinese government must act and stop this culture of making fake items and fool peoples.

  38. Mia says:

You cant do anything if the software or firmware crash´s on o clone n95! Sorry but thats a fact! I know i´v been there myself…money in the trashcan…and I didnt know it was fake until I got to a nokia carepoint…then they told me it was a clone, and that they cant do anything. Dont trust anyone if there isnt paper on the phone you baught..and proof that its a real one!

  39. Chris G says:

I think that the Nokia Replicas are pretty descent quality, and I think that for the price that Nokia charges comparing to the manufacturing costs of the N95 8gb is a very big difference (Dont want to say how much,it might turn Nokia customers very angry),however I do admit that there are some minor differences,I have compared them and I sell them both, however I never trick customers into thinking that they are getting the Genuine version when they are not, that is not the right thing to do.BUt over all I have sold the replicas and never got a complaint and I have sold the Genuine version and also never got a complaint.

  40. Shelby says:

Umm I think I may have a fake one, but it does say 5 megapixels. But it’s from china cause there a weird… chicken game? and the words are like… symbols, which are chinese.

  41. lushed1 says:

there is a guy sellin them on ebay.ie as we speak! i won an auction but never paid him. i did report him. the scumbag!

  42. Tman says:

I have Nokia N95 8GB fake one I need ribbon cable for it, for the screen.
    please help. I will pay.

  43. MK says:

It is very easy to find Fake chinese phone in ebay or any where. I have done several ebay purchases, and other retail purchases and ensure I always get original. This is how you can identify chinese phones.

    1. Most of them have dual sim, Nokia does not.
    2. Have touch screen and stylles, Nokia has only 5800
    3. No symbian OS, and no fetures like WLAN, GPS.

If you go to a shop and buy, ensure you test these features working or atleast switch on the phone and check software version, etc.

If you buy through ebay ask seller specific questions like, is GPS and WLAN working, confirmation on OS. And finaly get reply saying this is not fake. Ensure the seller respond through ebay message, so that you can open a dispute and get a refund.

  44. Bigpapa says:

The real deal simply has a barcode on the box which has the IMEI and says made in Finland or Korea. The key thing is none of the knockoffs have software disk included and the manuals are missing pages. Check all that before you buy.

  45. kane says:

  47. suresh subramaniam says:

i bought this n95 8gb last week and didn’t even notice that it’s a china fake phone, only after few day i realized. when i tried to download some of its software, then only i found out that its a fake. its no symbian, no wifi, no gps, no nokia at allllllllll!!!!!!!! what the heck!!!!!!!!!!!

i dont know who to blame? the china for making them? the nokia for not doing anything to encounter them? the bastard who sold them? or just me for buying them?

and all the threads, forums & comments on it, is basically useless. because, like me, people only going to check on these threads, forums & comments after its too late, only after they got one of these FAKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!
but i suppose its a lesson for us right.
    HMMMMMMMMMMMMMM………………..

  48. aymen ferchichi says:

hey guys me too i had bought the trucking nokia Chinese version or whatever it has a nokia n series on the back it give serial if you compose *#0000# and write on it that it is make on Finland but it don’t have Gps or wifi and don’t support symbians is it Chinese version or SMTHG else

    • mike says:

is it the chinese fak one?does it not have gps??

    • asimo says:

i just brought it today, exactly same like yours…im also do the same thing..yeahhh you right, wifi and gps not supported..and when you send the files such as picture or video or any media,it will said “write fail”…when you open up the battery what you can see is,there is a slot for Micro sd(memory card)…from my observation if n958gb supposed build in memory card.it has own chip,we can’t simply pull out the memory card.it doesnt matter i lost a hundred dollars, now i know how to differentiate between clone and authentic…

      All,
How to check either the phone is clone or original manufactured by NOKIA,i can confirm you see it…write sms then press *..* is a button to change the character number, english….if it support chinese character it means it’s totally clone…i can guarantee……..NOKIA Corp, doesn’t include chinese character when writing sms…

  49. rashad says:

ineed the password of nokian958g china ..
