Now this is how you try to change things on the wayward ship that is Motorola’s mobile phone division. The handset manufacturing arm of Motorola has seen better times. More specifically, the times that immediately followed the Motorola RAZR’s initial release. Those were good (read: rich) times at Moto.

But, after four straight quarters of massive losses (the most recent loss was $388 million – massive enough for ‘ya?), Motorola has seriously examined the proposition of selling off its cellphone business.

Motorola handset divisionToday, Motorola announced that newly appointed CEO Greg Brown will take direct control of the helm at Motorola’s handset division. Brown apparently wanted to oversee the unit and help it return to greener pastures (you know, green, as in the color of money).

Now, the question remains. Is this move just the latest last-ditch effort by Motorola to save the handset division? Are they getting ready to sell the unit? Only time will tell. But with the hits they’ve been taking, it probably won’t be too long before we know for sure.

Motorola have always made terrible phones, the RAZR wasnt an exception to that, it was just a thin and then fashionable phone – but it was still crap! In addition to historically awful phones they had a terible OS – I think the S60 and UIQ route of late will help.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that Moto will not sell their handset division. I think they are just trying one last ditch effort to right the wrongs
