FCC unveils Motorola M990 Smart Rider – a branch on the ugly tree

This thing didn’t just fall off the ugly tree (as it hit every branch on the way down). This thing is the ugliest branch on the ugly tree!
Just take a gander at this here Motorola (NYSE: MOT) M990 Smart Rider that the FCC just published. No, this isn’t a joke. The Moto M990 Smart Rider is the company’s newest handset to pass through the FCC (no wonder they’re thinking of selling the handset division). Motorola is touting this thing as a “GSM high tier fixed mobile car phone.” Apparently, this block-ish nightmare will be bringing some quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900Mhz) goodness to your whip. And, as if to justify this monstrosity’s design Motorola explains that their Motorola M990 Smart Rider doesn’t just do “voice but also high speed data services, entertainment, information, advanced network connection, BT connections, GPS navigation services, etc.” Ok, so 3G, WiFi, GPS navigation, Bluetooth, and video features are in the cards – great.

Moto’s apparently looking to market this thing towards “business men, limousines and private cars looking for stylish communication and navigation solution.” Unfortunately, the Motorola M990 Smart Rider is a few years past its mark. Fixed car phones? How 90’s is that?
Still, we do have to give Motorola points on the nostalgia tip. Does the big, black, glossy display spark memories of Knight Rider? Or is it just the similar model name? Please don’t say it’s just me.

Hey,
Sometimes I wish I had a mobile phone attached to my car … that way I wouldn’t have to worry if I’d forgotten my “regular” cell phone.
KITT: Michael, I cannot allow you to jeopardize your life. I am assuming control.
Michael Knight: No, you’re not, KITT!
Actually I really like it, and I think people that say the kind of stuf you say real idiots, people usually have different tastes (think God) and in fact your’s not that great, I beat you’re completely into mass design stuff (like apple stuff), keep in the good way, the design brigade appreciate that a gerk like you stay away from beautifull things
