Nokia CEO: Windows Mobile who? Try S60 Touch in 2H 2008
By Will Park on Monday, February 11th, 2008 at 7:31 AM PST In Announcements, Nokia, Symbian, Windows Mobile
I’m sure there aren’t many of you out there that were waiting on Nokia (NYSE: NOK) to follow Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE)’s (XPERIA X1) lead and bring Windows Mobile to an N-series device. Well, actually I’d be willing to bet that some WinMo fans wouldn’t be too averse to seeing a Windows Mobile powered Nokia handset. But for a true die-hard Nokia fan, WM would just be a blasphemous insult.
Rest easy, Nokia’s CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo put the official kibosh on any Windows Mobile-powered Nokia rumors with his statement that, “we don’t have plans to do Windows in mobile at the moment.” Right, in other words, WinMo ain’t happenin’ guys and gals.
But, what is happening is S60 Touch. And it’s going to happen in 2H 2008. That’s an official launch windows from the big guy himself, and it means that we’ll be seeing the much anticipated S60 Touch interface sooner than expected.
3G iPhone, meet S60 Touch. This one’s going to be a fight to the death. Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) had better have some serious ammo if they’re going to compete, Nokia ain’t joking around with S60 Touch.

“put the official keybash ”
That’s “kibosh”
Does anyone with education proofread this site? It’s constantly filled with mistakes. Love it otherwise
Kevin, ever read TechCrunch?
I’m glad that Nokia won’t make a WinMo phone. That would be gross!
Thank you Nokia, I bet S60 touch will own in summer.

Perhaps they are joking around
Sorry, for the mistake. I always use “kibosh.” My iPhone must have changed the spelling or something. I fixed it.
I’m with Kevin. The writing on this site suXXXXX. The content is good, the ideas are alright, but the writing is crap. Hire an editor, please!
Okay, two things:
1. Will, you need to learn to read before you write. This statement from a CEO:
“we don’t have plans to do Windows in mobile at the moment.”
Translates to, “No Windows now, but anything is possible at any point in time.” It does not mean “Right, in other words, WinMo ain’t happenin’ guys and gals,” as you wrote.
“At the moment” is the key here, Will. It gives Olli a classic double-edged statement – he can say “No Windows” without having to say “ever.”
2. Watch that Gizmodo video that Kevin linked to. Then go back and rewrite the following statement with a straight face:
“3G iPhone, meet S60 Touch. This one’s going to be a fight to the death. Apple had better have some serious ammo if they’re going to compete, Nokia ain’t joking around with S60 Touch.”
Lay off the crack, dude. Nokia’s dominance will continue because they’re ginormous, not because S60 looks so awesome. It doesn’t. It looks like something Apple moved on from two years ago. Why the F would Nokia show this at MWC? It’s an embarassment. I mean, it’s fine for internal development reference and to prove to the bosses that you’re making progress. But I can go to the Apple Store and buy iPhone right now for $400 and Nokia’s showing a rendering of a UI that they promise will ship in 6 months … and it can’t hold a candle AT ALL to iPhone’s UI? That’s a joke.
I’m not talking about the OS, so don’t get all flame-panties about Symbian vs A locked down OS X. I’m talking about the reality of iPhone’s UI vs. what Nokia showed of S60 Touch in that Giz video. Total embarrassment to the good citizens of Finland who commute to work on their bikes each day.
Side note: Anyone can put any name on their post. I only wrote the first comment. Film link was another Kevin. Guess I’ll have to add more to the name
