O2 and Vodafone team up on 3G femtocell trial

Alcatel-Lucent FemtocellWith carriers and manufacturers rushing to get femtocells into the hands of the end-user, the those searches decent wireless signals are going to be a fading memory. Femtocells are basically end-user wireless signal boosters – they help customers get reliable signal strength and reduce infrastructure costs for carriers. No wonder Sprint’s already commercialized their femtocell offering and working on bringing to technology to market.

Now it looks like there are a couple new players in the femtocell game. O2 is working with NEC to trial 3G femtocells in the UK, while Vodafone Spain is set to trial 3G femtocells from Huawei and Alcatel-Lucent. If all goes well, O2 says that they’ll be offering femtocell technology to customers next year.
