Sony Ericsson’s new naming scheme?

Apparently, Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) will be changing their naming scheme while keeping the “letter plus three numbers” format at the same time. The chart above pretty much sums it up. Let’s recap:
- First letter represent the series. “C” is for Cyber-shot, “W” for Walkman, “S” for snapshot, “X” for Xperia. What’s “G” for?
- The second slot shows where the phone is placed in the overall range. 9 is the highest and 1 is the lowest.
- Third slot is kinda confusing one – it’s something with the model version. “Succession models are listed” says Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Translate. If anyone knows more about it, please comment bellow.
- Finally, the last slot indicates the form factor of the device. 0-2 is used for candybar, 2-5 for slider, 6-8 for clamshell, and 9 for other form factors.
The problem remains, though, for all handset makers. Today’s high-end is tomorrow’s mid-range phone. How will that affect the naming scheme? Maybe a new letter could be used for new devices? Something like “SW” for Super-Walkman.

I think the second number is pretty simple…
Take the N73 and the N78 for example… If the N73 is like C800, then the N78 would be C810. At least that’s how I understand it.
I really do agree with you about how today’s high-end is tomorrow’s mid-end though. This is really apparent in Nokia’s Nseries. Take the N70 for example… Although, I think many Nseries phones are not even high-end at the time they were released (N77…).
The number represents the phones version. Lets take K800, K810 and 850: They belong to the same family but are little improved among each other.
