T-Mobile to enter Canadian market?

By Dusan Belic on Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 at 6:01 AM PST In Rumors, T-Mobile

T-Mobile to enter Canadian market? There’s no doubt T-Mobile (NYSE: DT), like any normal business, wants to expand its operations. They already have strong presence in a number of European markets and are one of the top four mobile operators in the U.S. Now according to some sources they plan to move to Canada. The problem is, however, that Canadian law requires that the owner of a telecommunication company are Canadian. Somehow, I don’t see much point of protecting the domestic market this way. So far, Canadian paid more for mobile services than their neighbours from the south. Liberating the market will certainly benefit the end users and according to CIBC, that could actually happen in the near future. We’ll keep our fingers crossed for this one, as we’re sure T-Mobile will add value just like they did in the U.S.

WOW! That is amazing! As a Canadian living in the USA for the past 6 years, and recently having switched to T-Mobile I can say that this is a very very good move. I have been very happy with T-Mobile, and know how expensive mobile phone service is in Canada. None of my Blackberry-carrying friends there have unlimited data for as little as $20/month, nor the opportunity for WiFi UMA. The USA could learn a think or two though. Back in 2000 I paid only $5/month for unlimited e-mail on my Sanyo 4900. When I moved to the USA I couldn’t find a deal close to that. Since then however it seems the tables have turned and there are better mobile plans south of the border. Will this mean T-Mobile USA and T-Mobile Canada will have free T-Mobile to T-Mobile? I can only hope.
