NextWave and Alcatel-Lucent to bring mobile TV to WiMAXWiMAX is getting some more play as the next-generation mobile broadband solution in the US. With Sprint still leading to way in their push to launch a nationwide WiMAX network, WiMAX is shaping up to be the nearest-term solution for truly wireless broadband. So, it makes sense that NextWave is looking to broadcast mobile TV over the WiMAX standard.

NextWave Wireless Inc. has partnered up with Alcatel-Lucent to integrate its MxTV technology with WiMAX networks. NextWave wants to give WiMAX operators the option to deliver mobile TV and audio over their network – much like MobiTV does with other carriers.

“User demand for mobile broadcast services is rapidly expanding and we believe that the exciting new applications offered through this alliance will provide mobile operators a unique ability to deliver the key differentiating feature of 4G networks,” said Allen Salmasi, CEO of NextWave Wireless.

We can’t wait for WiMAX to go live in the US. Will MobiTV pursue the WiMAX environment?

Sprint needs to get on the Wimax before they get bought out. I never hear anything about beta testing or wimax phones from them. I really don’t know what they are waiting for. Unless they are trying to figure out how to make more money on text messages and picture messages and ringtones instead of upgrading there network.
