SongNumbers mobile music service gives users music without softwareCan a music service actually sell music without any software, media players, or DRM? Well, the newest mobile music service, SongNumbers, thinks it can.

SongNumbers aims to go truly cross-platform by doing away with the platform altogether. The service claims that their “critical mass media utility” will empower artists and record labels by allowing customers to listen to and buy music directly from their mobile phone. The catch is that the customer doesn’t need to install anything on their cellphone. There’s no software, no media player, no DRM – just music on the cellphone.

Through SongNumbers’ patent-pending technology, each music track is assigned a phone number that customers can call to hear a preview of the song. If the song tickles the user’s fancy, a simple press of a number key buys them the track.  But, it doesn’t end there, artists and labels can make money on the preview of the song through ads.

Interestingly, the service’s website seems to be for-show at the moment.
