At the Open Source in Mobile conference Ari Jaaksi gave a talk about what Nokia (NYSE: NOK) is doing with Open Source and how they increasingly want to adopt the philosophies these communities represent. Nokia does not want to take code, fiddle with it to make it fit inside a product and let that be that, they want to contribute their changes upstream so that everyone in the future can benefit from what was accomplished.
GPL version 3 was talked about, the follies experienced when making the Webkit browsr in S60 devices, the “nightmare” that is known as the email client inside Maemo and how Nokia’s new values were created with the same method and heart of the open source community.
A couple points were made that I feel every geek should know: Linux is not important, the mass market doesn’t care. Open Source is not important, the mass market doesn’t care. Nokia’s goal is not 100% Open Source code, they need to make money too.
