Koodo Mobile opens its virtual doors

Koodo phones

The day has come and Koodo Mobile’s website is up and running, just like we’ve expected. Currently the Telus (NYSE: TU) owned MVNO is offering three phones – Samsung U410, MOTOKRZR and Motorola (NYSE: MOT) W385, which cost CA$75, CA$200 and CA$125 respecitvely. But the price can go down, not with a contract – but with the so called “tab.” Here’s how they explain the “tab:”

Instead of a fixed-term contract, Koodo Mobile lets you run a tab towards the price of a new mobile phone. If you’re eligible, it’s a flexible new way to get a phone without paying the full retail price, and without a chubby contract. And, it’s also a way to earn a brand new phone down the road.

In addition to phones, there are three plans in the mix – Talk & Text Combo which is available for CA$25 per month, Five Essentials Combo for CA$30/month and All You Need Combo for CA$65/month. Every “Combo” plan includes Unlimited Local Evenings and Weekends, Call Waiting, Call Forwarding, Conference Calling and Per-Second Billing. Alternatively, you can create your own plan and/or get yourself some phone accessories along the way… Check out Koodo Mobile’s website for more information.

At first I was really really excited. Saw all the catchy banners around school and the subway. Then reality sank in.
Even the cheapest plan ($25) still doesn’t include:
    Voicemail ( Another $5)
    Call display (another extra $5)

And this really dubious thing called “Detailed billing” that you can get for an additional $3. Really? Does that mean that without this option, my bill will be a summary?

I don’t know, Telus has always had a reputation for being a rip-off, and Koodo seems to be a new & improved version, but sadly still just a gentle rip-off. I have to admit, the “Tab” and no contract are very appealing, but lord knows what the fees are for going on this tab.
