c UK: demand surges for sub £30 mobiles

According to research from GfK, low-end handsets have almost doubled their share of the market in the last year, in the UK.

With the slowdown in growth of contract sales, Operators have been focusing on Prepay – with the resulting drop in market prices. These price drops are nicely highlighted by the Carphone Warehouse’s recent offer of the £2.95 Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) J110i – talk about removing barriers to entry!

Argos, Tesco, and Asda (the latter two of which are UK Supermarkets) hve also been heavily in to the game, as you would imagine – massive scale of operations again forcing down unit costs.

Crumbs, £2.95 for a handset – whatever next, free with a magazine? Surely not!
