U Mobile, in which South Korea’s KTF and NTT DoCoMo (NYSE: DCM) of Japan invested a combined USD200 million to purchase a 33% joint stake last December, held a ceremony to launch the 3G service in Kuala Lumpur. By 2010 U Mobile hopes to have signed up 3.1 million customers.

Comment: there isn’t too much info on U Mobile on their site right now, but, the ever-useful Wikipedia did give me the following:

In addition to offering mobile telephony and mobile data, U Mobile intends to be Malaysia’s first ever true mobile TV service provider with its Mobile LiveTV™ service that utilises internationally accepted Digital Video Broadcast – Handheld (DVB-H) technology .U Mobile targets to commence its mobile service and Mobile LiveTV™ user trial before the end of 2007.

So, there we go – another DVB-H deployment – it will be great to see some stats once the service has been up and running for a while. In a somewhat cliché way, “Asia-Pac” countries are always regarded as the regions that enjoy Mobile TV success – let’s see if U Mobile can do the same!
