m5 USA: Adults just dont care about Mobile Music!

A bit of a cover-all statement that one, but a survey conducted by Jupiter Research says two-thirds of US adults don’t care about listening to music on Mobile – and this from the land of the iPhone? Surely not! Apparently reasons for this are cost of downloads, and hassle involved – don’t people know that everything worth getting involves effort though..?

The author of the story about the report goes on to mention that he thinks Operator portal download services are too clunky (fair point generally), and that only iTunes and Nokia (NYSE: NOK) Music Store get it right, along with the upcoming Sprint (NYSE: S) store.

Here are the stats from the report:

  • Only 5% of U.S. mobile subscribers sideload tunes from their computer
  • Only 2% download tracks over the air
  • Only 14% of users are even remotely interested in over-the-air downloads

Personally, whilst I think this is a fair enough study, I would say it’s not reflective generally – using my standard study vessel of sitting on the train, my anecdotal research suggests that a LOT of people are using Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) products. A few have other brand music players, and a few are using video ot gaming devices. However, the remainder, which is a reasonable amount ARE using Mobile devices. On “my” train, Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) is particularly popular…!
