Iranian chess player caught cheating with SMS

An Iranian chess player competing in the Dubai Open Chess tournament has been caught cheating with SMS. The incident happened when M. Sadatnajafi, with an Elo rating of 2301, received text messages with tips for his next move while playing against Chinese Grandmaster Li Chao.

He was caught after just 10 moves, when he dropped his phone and investigations showed that it had received messages from someone in Iran in Farsi with instructions of what moves to make. Apparently, his advisor watched the game online as it was broadcasted over the Internet.

Chief arbiter Casto Abundo, confirming the incident, said: “As per the International Chess Federation (FIDE) laws, no player is supposed to use the mobile phone while playing. The matter is still being investigated and a report is being forwarded to the FIDE for further action.”

Aside from being expelled from the tournament, Sadatnajafi may also face a ban or may even lose his rating.
