Verizon Wireless uses solar powered cell tower in desert

Speaking of Earth Day, Verizon (NYSE: VZ) Wireless is doing their part to keep things on our home planet as green as possible. Verizon apparently has a cell tower out in the desert that is operated solely on solar power. The solar cells on the cell tower charge a battery to ensure that Verizon customers out in the cuts will have a cell signal even on cloudy days.
The use of solar power in the desert is more likely due to the lack of infrastructure in the desert than Verizon’s green intentions. The cell tower is so remote that maintenance crews have to be flown in by helicopter. Still, it’s nice to see the No. 2 carrier using alternative energy sources.
